How safe are tea tree and lavender oils for children?!

How safe are tea tree and lavender oils for children?

But can these seemingly natural ingredients cause abnormal breast growth in boys and girls?

Several small studies have suggested that regular use of lotions, shampoos, hair styling products, and even colognes that contain lavender and tea tree oils cause breast growth in boys, a phenomenon known as gynecomastia, and in girls in aged 4-5 years.

Other studies have not come to the same conclusion, and the occurrence of such effects is very rare. In general, scientific studies of natural products are extremely rare. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not regulate the production of essential oils unless they are used in pharmaceuticals, making it difficult to know how safe and effective such products are

We asked several experts to comment on the results of the study.

What do the studies show?

Tea tree oil and lavender oil are the most widely used essential oils. Although not scientifically proven, lavender oil is often used in aromatherapy and soothing lotions, and tea tree oil in acne, nail fungus, and other skin conditions

In 2007, pediatrician Clifford Block noticed 4 , 7 and 10 years of abnormal breast growth. As a result of conversations with his parents, he found out that some used a healing balm based on lavender oil, others used a gel and shampoo for hair with lavender and tea tree extracts, and still others used shampoo and body lotion with lavender oil.

Block performed tests to identify internal and external sources of the hormone estrogen, which could potentially cause changes in boys. He eventually found them in the cosmetics their parents used.

Lavender and tea tree contain phytoestrogen, a hormone-like substance. Another source of phytoetrogen is soy.

Block's findings, published in 2007 in the New England Journal of Medicine, led the National Institute for Environmental Studies to conduct a study and conclude that both essential oils are a source of estrogen. The discovery prompted a national institute to issue a warning that tea tree and lavender oils could potentially disrupt the endocrine system in boys if used regularly.

Tony Starkman, CEO of the Australian Tea Tree Growers Association, called the studies inconclusive. According to him, cosmetic products contain too little oil to have a similar effect. “The fact is that two of the three products used externally did not contain tea tree oil at all, so linking the development of gynecomastia with this product is only hypothetical at best, at worst it is simply incompetent,” he writes in a statement to medical news portal.

A year after the National Institute for Environmental Studies, the Institute for the Study of Aromatics carried out experiments on rats.

No evidence has been found that tea tree oil and lavender oil cause hormonal changes.

In 2013, a second study was completed, which also did not find a similar effect.

Most recently, pediatrician Alejandro Diaz, MD, published the results of a study citing Agua de Violetas cologne, popular among Hispanics, as the cause of abnormal breast growth in two young male patients. His conclusions were drawn from the chemical analysis of the cologne.

Aromatherapy expert and consultant Robert Teaserend, who lectures extensively on essential oils, has suggested that impurities in the oils may have caused a similar effect on Diaz's patients.

"I think what we're seeing is a mystery. Every year, tons of tea tree and lavender oils are used in cosmetics. We don't know how many are used on children, but what we're seeing doesn't look like an epidemic. " We see a small number of such cases," Teaserend says.

According to Trevor Cates, research on tea tree and lavender oils is not exhaustive. Dr. Kate is a natural healing advocate based in Park City, Utah.

She believes that many factors can play a role in breast growth during adolescence, but the phytoestrogen content of essential oils is too low to lead to gynecomastia. The boys may have been exposed to other environmental toxicants suspected of causing the problem, or may have had a genetic predisposition.

She says she would like to see research where oils are freed from potential contaminants such as pesticides and chemicals from packaging.

Diaz, who works at Nicklaus Children's Hospital in Miami, acknowledges that some children are predisposed to gynecomastia, which develops with little or no exposure to essential oils or the contaminants they contain. But he adds that product manufacturers have a responsibility to ensure that products are safe for people.

Block says he continues to see 3-4 cases of gyno every year. In one case, a mother used a lavender oil spray throughout her apartment, incl. for bed linen. When her son, by decision of the guardianship authorities, went to live with his father, his condition improved. A similar scenario was observed in a 6-year-old girl.

In another case, a boy stopped using his father's favorite hair oil containing tea tree extract and his breast size returned to normal.

"This is not a common occurrence," Block says. "I see this in a number of children"

In all cases, Block and Diaz noted a decrease in breast size in children after the removal of cosmetics.

None of the doctors said that it is worth completely abandoning the use of products that contain essential oils.

Diaz believes that he does not have sufficient evidence that these oils are unsafe. "In Miami, kids use Agua de Violetas cologne a lot, and most of them don't get gyno. No one bans the use of soy, although it also has an estrogenic effect.
