Zamioculcas - care, transplant | WikiBotanika.ru

Until the end of the nineties, the function of the money tree was regularly carried by the common fat woman, or Crassula. But a stream of currency poured into the country, and then it turned out that dollars were not subject to the “ruble” talisman. Our people are invincible - the "dollar" equivalent of a fat woman was immediately found. Zamioculcas, or aroid palm, is a mega-popular monetary symbol of the 21st century.

How did they find out about the properties of this native of Africa in Russia? You can make another attempt to unravel the secret of the monetary magnetism of this "palm tree", how plausible the answer will be - time will tell. In any case, you need to know the biology of the plant and take care of it properly, because only a healthy zamiokulkas “functions” correctly, attracting green currency. A sick flower can work in the opposite direction ...

Classification and appearance of Zamioculcas

Zamioculcas is another representative of Aroids ( Araceae ), which was loved by interior designers and came into fashion in the early 2000s. Before him, monstera, scindapsus, anthurium and others confidently “registered” in indoor floriculture. The genus Zamioculcas consists of a single species. Zamioculcas Zamiefolia outwardly is very similar to zamia - a plant from another, American, continent. This similarity first misled botanists, and then was reflected in the species name of the plant.

You can distinguish zamia from zamioculcas by leaf blades - in the first they are in the form of a rounded spatula, and in the second they are pointed. Zamiya stores water in a thick trunk, the dollar palm tree does not have a trunk as such - a bunch of feathery leaves grows from the ground. Both plants are toxic, but zamia has surpassed its "namesake" - it is much more poisonous and is not bred in home culture.

Zamioculcas was first discovered in 1828. Madagascar at that time enjoyed increased attention from collectors of exotic plants, one of them was Conrad Loddiges. He became the discoverer of the Emerald Palm ( Emerald Palm ) - Zamiokulkas was awarded such a poetic name. Some old works contain the first name of Zamioculcas - Caladium, i.e. related callam.

The modern name was given in 1908 by the German botanist Adolf Engler. Several close subspecies growing both in Madagascar and in East Africa were combined into one species. Zanzibar, Tanzania, Kenya and Mozambique - the natural range of Zamioculcas - territories with an extremely hot climate. This ultra-resistant plant inhabits both red-hot rubble slopes and deep shade of gorges, dry sands and moist mountain forests. Zamioculcas is not afraid of fires in the savannah - a deeply hidden root gives fresh leaves instead of burnt ones. If the animals trample the bush, then a new “palm tree” grows from each leaf. And so he lives in nature - persistent, like a true African.

The appearance of Zamioculcas, bred at home, is no different from the natural form. This is a large plant with glossy pinnate leaves. The leaf can reach one and a half meters in length, has a thickened petiole - rachis. It grows slowly - it gives a maximum of 4-5 leaves per year, as it grows older - one or two leaves, no more. In case of lack of water, the plant discards most of the leaf blade, leaving the rachis as a reservoir of moisture.

But the main "strategic reserve" in case of drought, Zamioculcas keeps underground - its barrel-shaped rhizome, in nature can reach half a meter in diameter. A home flower grows a rhizome as much as the volume of the pot allows. It happens that a plastic vessel cannot withstand pressure from an overgrown root and is deformed, or even cracked. Feeding roots extend from the main rhizome from above. In addition to nutrition, they can perform the function of respiration and even partially photosynthesis - in case the plant has to shed its leaves.

The dollar palm blooms unexpectedly modestly - an ear is formed near the ground, wrapped in a faded green blanket. However, the flower has its admirers - termites, therefore in America the Zamioculcas inflorescence is called ant corn. Russian insects did not appreciate the "dollar" nectar (maybe it's for the best ...). The opinion that a flower dies after a single flowering is incorrect - Zamioculcas lives up to 10 years at least, and in its homeland it is considered an immortal tree.

Zamioculcas breeding is at the very beginning of its journey - at the moment only one stable variety has been bred, having a 60 cm compact bush.

Zamioculcas - care

Aroid palm does not require special attention. On the contrary, excessive watering, spraying and "stuffing" fertilizers can ruin the plant.

Light Zamioculcas prefers bright diffused light. However, it easily acclimatizes in direct sunlight and in the depths of the northern room. But you should not drastically change the intensity of lighting - any endurance has a limit.

It will live where you mostly have to put artificial flowers - you can put an adult specimen in a shady place and limit watering. The plant will not die, will not lose its appearance, it will only stop growing and last in this mode for several years. For extreme unpretentiousness, it has earned the sympathy of designers.

Heat-loving zamiokulkas is demanding only in one thing - in summer it wants almost thirty-degree heat, and in winter it should not be placed where the temperature is below plus 16. Drafts are not welcome and can even lead to massive yellowing of the leaves.

Light soil is a must for dollar palm health. Even if the substrate is poor - nothing bad, these are just the soils that Zamiokulkas is used to in nature. Soddy soil loosened with sand (60% and 40%, respectively), perlite or vermiculite is suitable. Another composition is sheet, soddy land, sand and small pebbles - 1.5: 1: 1: 0.5. If there is any doubt that the local soil is good enough, you should buy an earthen mix for succulents or cacti.

Some soils, especially in the taiga zone, are acidic. To get soil close to neutral, add a pinch of lime. Drainage should take up at least a quarter of the height of the container. The bottom of the vessel must have holes for the outflow of water.

Transplant is an infrequent operation. The young plant is transshipped once a year, usually in early spring. The "apartment" of the dollar tree must be selected good, to match the inhabitant. The container must be heavy, otherwise it will tip over: after all, the leaves are long, fleshy and quite heavy.

[!] Attention! All parts of the plant contain toxins. You should work with gloves.

A new vessel is chosen not much larger than the previous one - so that there is a distance of 1-2 cm between the tuber and its walls. During transplantation, the tuber should not be buried in the ground. Much like a beet root, it will protrude slightly above the surface. It is convenient to combine transplantation with division of the rhizome. Zamioculcas planted in fresh soil is placed for two weeks in a shaded place and watered very moderately, only moistening the surface of the substrate.

For tall specimens, a wide container is more suitable - the plant looks harmonious in it, and in this case it is easier to transplant. Zamioculcas aged 5 years and older can be left in the same pot, replacing only the topsoil.

Emergency repotting is done when the root system is rotten. As a rule, this is the result of excessively generous watering and heavy soil. The problem is outwardly expressed in the fact that not only old leaves, but also young ones turn yellow in Zamiokulkas. The base of the petiole softens and the leaf leans towards the ground. It is necessary to carefully (with a brush) clean the tuber from soil residues, rinse in a weak solution of potassium permanganate and dry. Then remove all rotten roots, if necessary, remove part of the tuber itself. Slices are sprinkled with ash, you can sprinkle with Oxyhom, Fundazol. The above-ground part of the plant is treated with the same preparations. The container is disinfected, and the soil is completely replaced.

Watering zamioculcas can be summed up in one phrase – “less is better”. In the sense that it is rarely necessary to water the plant, waiting for the earthen clod to dry out almost completely. But the water must be necessarily soft and, highly desirable, warm.

A dollar palm tree can be left for a month and a half without watering at all - when going on vacation, you should not flood the tree "in reserve", because it has its own reservoir of moisture - the rhizome.

[!] It is not recommended to water the plant from the pallet! This is the surest way to rot the main root.

You can spray the money tree, but not very often. Direct sunlight should not fall on wet leaves - drops of water will work like lenses, and the plant will get burned. It is much more useful to remove dust from leaf blades with a damp cloth - they acquire a characteristic waxy sheen. Many even use a leaf polish to enhance the decorative qualities of the plant.

Air humidity is absolutely not critical. Zamiokulkas is able to live in a humid greenhouse and in an office that is overdried with air conditioners - natural hardening affects.

Fertilizer should be applied carefully. An overdose can lead to metabolic disorders and death of the plant. As with watering, the rule applies - it is better to under-give than to give too much. Zamioculkas is suitable for mineral complexes for cacti and succulents. The dose is halved against the recommended one.

Reproduction and features of the development of Zamioculcas

Any healthy part of the plant is suitable for procreation. It can be a rahia petiole with a nodule at the base (“baby”), a whole leaf, part of the central tuber, a root with a growing point, or even a piece of a leaf blade. Planting material is dried for 1-2 days and placed in a loose substrate - sand, vermiculite, etc. , slightly buried. Top cover with a transparent cap or film. You need a temperature of plus 25 ° C and good lighting, but not sunshine.

Differences will only be in the timing of germination. The fastest - in 2-3 weeks - the "baby" takes root, a little longer - the divided tuber. To grow a dollar palm from a piece of leaf, you need to be patient for six months or more.

For some owners, Zamioculcas behaves “on the contrary” - it starts growing in the dead of winter and does not show signs of life in the spring. The Chinese nicknamed him "crazy palm tree" - for unpredictability. But he comes from another hemisphere, and "domesticated" quite recently, and this explains everything. Plants have adapted and changed biorhythms, but especially stubborn ones live according to their internal “clock”.

[!] In a number of cases, the rooting of Zamioculcas is much more effective in autumn than in winter - again, due to "inverted" development cycles.

Pests and diseases

Insects usually bypass the African guest. A weakened plant can be attacked by a scale insect, less often by a spider mite. It is enough to mechanically remove pests and improve care.

Root rot is a dangerous disease (see above).

What does it have to do with dollars

It should be noted that this plant really, in some incomprehensible way, attracts merchants. Back in 1905, the then "Ostap Benders" tried to pass off the "Emerald Palm" as a new species, formed during the crossing of a palm tree and a fern. The "scientific sensation" was exposed and Zamiokulkas was forgotten for many years.

Recognized authorities in floriculture - the Dutch - did not stop trying to introduce this really beautiful plant into cultivation. Selection required the presence of seeds. And since it is almost impossible to get full-fledged Zamioculcas seeds in a temperate climate, they were bought in Africa. In the same place, specimens of plants with some unusual qualities were purchased - variegated, dwarf, lanceolate, etc.

Local residents quickly realized that previously useless grass could bring even a small, but income - and enthusiastically set about harvesting "wild plants". Hence the name of the plant. They pay for it in foreign currency - that means dollars.

The popularity star for the Dollar Palm rose in 1997 when sales at Dutch flower auctions exceeded all expectations. Moreover, 90% of the plants went to Russia.

About how the words are born: the squirrel in Kazakh is called "tiyyn-shishkan", in translation - "penny mouse". In tsarist times, a squirrel hunter was paid 1 kopeck. The money is not the same, but the animal has forever remained a "penny mouse".

Although, who knows what African shamans whispered over Zamioculcas...

home care, photo, varieties, transplant, flower diseases

Found in the tropical forests of Africa, the handsome Zamioculcas attracted the attention of botanists with its juicy fleshy leaves. In recent years, it has become very popular, especially after it became known that, according to Feng Shui, this flower brings good luck and financial well-being to the owners. Then he was quickly nicknamed the dollar tree and began to give for birthdays, holidays, decorate offices.

The genus Zamioculcas belongs to the Araceae family. And there is only one species in it - Zamioculcas zamiifolia (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) (1). However, other species can be found in the literature. For example, the lanceolate zamiokulkas (Zamioculcas lanceolata) - in 1929 it was described by the German botanist Gustav Peter, but at the moment it is classified as zamiokulkas zimyelous. And Zamioculcas Boivin (Zamioculcas boivinii), which was described in 1870, is now generally attributed to a different genus - gonatopus (Gonatopus boivinii).

This plant was first described in 1829. However, it became widespread quite recently - in 1996 (2), when Dutch nurseries actively began to propagate it.

With good care, the dollar tree reaches a height of 1 m or more. It blooms quite rarely, besides, its cob of light pink or light yellow color is not particularly decorative. But the fleshy dark green leaves are able to please all year round. 9 told us about the features of this plant0009 Tatyana Zhashkova, chairman of the Moscow Flower Growers club, collector of ornamental flowering plants.

Bug. This is the smallest of all existing varieties - its height does not exceed 30 cm. Its petioles are leafy from the very base, the leaves are dark green in color.

Zamicro. The very first undersized hybrid obtained by breeders in 2007. The height of the bush is about 60 cm. The leaves are much smaller than those of species plants.

Zenzi. Another undersized variety - its height also does not exceed 60 cm. Leaf petioles are strongly thickened at the base, and the leaves themselves are dark green in color. The variety does not tolerate waterlogging - it must be watered very carefully.

Lucky. Its main feature is the perfectly rounded shape of the leaves. A plant up to 55 cm high, grows very quickly - with good care, it reaches the size of an adult plant in just a few months.

lucky white. This is the best known cultivar of the variegated series. Its leaves have a beautiful marble color - cream and yellow spots and strokes are scattered over a green background. The plant is compact, 30 - 40 cm high.

Super Nova. This variety is a luxurious giant up to 1.5 m high. Its petioles are powerful, with an abundance of emerald green leaves.

Caring for a dollar tree at home

In general, Zamioculcas is an unpretentious plant, but there are several growing features that need to be taken into account.

Soil

Zamioculcus is a succulent plant, so soil marked “for cacti” is suitable for it.

But you can prepare the soil yourself. The ideal option is a mixture of leaf and sod land, peat and sand in a ratio of 1:1:1:1. It is useful to add small pebbles and pieces of charcoal to it.

Temperature

During active growth, the air temperature should be at least 18 °C, but optimally - 25 °C. But in winter, the plant has a dormant period, and at this time it needs coolness - around 16 ° C.

Lighting

Dollar tree loves plenty of light, but does not tolerate direct sunlight - they can cause leaf burn. In summer, this plant feels great on a glazed loggia, provided that the sun does not shine directly on it.

Humidity

Zamioculcas has a tuberous root, it is able to store water, therefore it easily tolerates underwatering and drought. Quietly lives without watering for up to 2 weeks - you can safely leave it when going on vacation, or leaving the office for a long vacation.

But he doesn't like overflows. If the water is in the pan, the tuber root may rot. Therefore, drainage and moderate watering are very important. Water only when the top layer of soil is very dry.

But at the same time, the dollar tree loves moist air very much, so it needs to be sprayed every day. Better yet, if it will be in a room where there is a humidifier. This is especially true in winter, when the plant is above the radiator.

Fertilizers and top dressings

Zamioculcas need top dressing only during the period of active growth - from April to September. It is best to use complex liquid fertilizers. During dormancy, it is not necessary to fertilize it.

Propagation of the dollar tree at home

There are three ways to propagate the dollar tree (Zamioculcas).

Tuber division. The dollar tree is most easily propagated by dividing the tuber. When transplanting an adult plant, the tubers are divided and planted in different pots. The pot for the separated tuber should not be very deep and not very large - about 3 - 4 cm wider than the rhizome.

Cutting. Cuttings are more labor intensive. First you need to find a kidney on a bare branch. Using a sharp knife, cut off the stem with a bud and shorten it slightly - there should be at least one leaf and a bud on the stem. The cut should be sprinkled with activated charcoal to disinfect from possible diseases. Dry the stalk for 5 - 7 hours (you can leave it overnight on the windowsill).

Pour vermiculite (a special mineral-rich substrate) into a small pot and deepen the cutting slightly. Water it every day for 2 to 4 weeks, during which time the cutting should give good roots. And then it can be transplanted to a permanent place.

Sheet. A simple but not always 100% result method. Moreover, it is very long. Separate a few small leaves from the branch, slightly deepen them in loose vermiculite, peat or other substrate. Moisturize it a little.

These "leafy" seedlings need good lighting. You can create a greenhouse effect for him by covering with a film. The tuber from the leaves is formed within a few months.

Transplanting a dollar tree at home

The roots of Zamioculcas are strong and powerful, they can easily break a plastic container, so it is better to plant it in a ceramic or clay container. The pot should be slightly larger than the previous one. Be sure to put a good layer of drainage on the bottom.

Transplantation should be carried out using the transshipment method, planting the plant in a new pot along with the old clod of earth. But make sure that the top tubers are slightly exposed, about 1 cm.

Important! The sap of the dollar tree is poisonous and can cause skin burns, so it should be transplanted with rubber gloves.

Dollar tree diseases

Root rot. The main problem of zamiokulkas is watering - with excess moisture, their roots rot. You can recognize the problem by withering shoots and yellowing leaves.

You can save the plant if you start treatment at the very beginning. The first step is to remove the plant from the pot and remove the rotten roots. After that, the rest must be washed in a weak solution of potassium permanganate, dried and planted in a new pot with fresh soil.

Dollar tree pests

Spider mite. In the initial stage, the infection is not easy to detect - the pests are very small. But if numerous light dots began to appear on the leaves, it is clearly him. With severe infection, the plants are covered with cobwebs.

Kleschevit and Fitoverm will help to cope with the pest (3).

Aphid. This pest is well visible on plants, you can't confuse it with anyone. With a large population, it can do much harm, up to the death of Zamiokulkas.

Biotlin Tanrek, Karate or biopreparation Fitoverm will help to cope with aphids (3). Apply pesticides as directed.

Shields. These insects are covered with a strong shell, they settle on all frequent plants and it is not easy to deal with them.

The first thing to do is remove the insects with a cotton swab dipped in alcohol. Then wash the plant with soapy water. And then treat the bush with Aktellik (3).
