Opening of the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center

The Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center is set up and decorated several weeks before – but it really isn’t lit until the official Tree Lighting Ceremony. Really every New York visitor who is in the city between December and early January visits the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center. The tree is the absolute star in Manhattan for this period. In the days that follow, it is dismantled and, thanks to Habitat for Humanity, processed so that it can be used to build houses for those in need. After that, it’s back to waiting until the next Christmas season in New York.

The opening of the Christmas tree is a special event

Around 8:00 p.m. New York time, the time has usually come. The huge Christmas tree in New York finally shines in its full glory. And rightly so, because the Christmas tree in New York at Rockefeller Center has nothing to hide. Beautiful and sparkling, it decorates the plaza every year.

My tip

Sparkling and beautiful, it is the centerpiece of the Plaza every year. 10 Mindblowing Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Facts

Before we dive into the facts, let us give you a quick idea of when you can see the famous Christmas tree in New York. The Rockefeller Center Tree is typically cut down at the beginning of November before it arrives at Rockefeller Plaza in mid-November. That doesn’t mean yet that it will be decorated right away!

First, the tree needs to be trimmed to guarantee the beautiful look we all know. After the trim, which typically takes about a week, the decorating-process starts and doesn’t finish until the day of the lighting ceremony.

How many miles did it have to travel to now be admired by the whole world? How many lights actually shine on the tree so that it can shine brightly? We took a closer look at the famous Christmas tree and discovered some exciting facts.

  1. Of course, everything is super-sized in New York City. The Christmas tree is no exception and the famous Norway Spruce typically comes in at a height of around 85 feet.
  2. The sparkling tree weighs about 13 tons.
  3. The branches of the fir are illuminated with about 50,000 LED bulbs on almost 10 kilometers of cable.
  4. The only thing that could possibly outdo the thousands of lights is the sparkling Christmas star tree topper. It is made from 25,000 real Swarovski crystals and is either light nor cheap. It weighs an astonishing 900 pounds and costs about $1.5 million.
  5. The first Tree Lighting Ceremony took place back in 1933.
  6. The spruces grow for over 90 years in order to have the honor of being the centerpiece of NYC’s beginning to the holiday season. The first tree lighting ceremony dates to 1933 meaning the trees are older than the ceremony itself.
  7. Every year, the tree is donated and comes from a different town, sometimes hundreds of miles away from Rockefeller Plaza. Oftentimes, however, it comes from New York or Pennsylvania. In 2021 the Rockefeller Christmas Tree will come from Maryland.
  8. On average, the Christmas tree gets 500,000 visitors a day! That comes to a total of 18 million Christmas visitors during its time as the centerpiece of Rockefeller Plaza.
  9. The tree consumes an incredible 1,297-kilowatt-hours per day. These come in large part from solar cells installed at Rockefeller Center. A good thing – I don’t think anyone wants to pay that power bill!
  10. Once the lights are turned off in January, the wood of the tree is donated to charity. For many years, it was mulched and then spread throughout New York’s parks. But then doors and door frames were made from the wood and donated to those in need. Sometimes the tree was also turned into paper.

How much does the Rockefeller Christmas tree cost?

The Rockefeller Christmas tree costs around $73,500 if you were to purchase it yourself.

However, according to AM New York, the Rockefeller Center never actually pays for the tree because it is donated. And, the Rockefeller Center’s owner, Tishman Speyer, covers any costs associated with transporting it.

This year the tree has been donated by the Price family.

Supposedly, the Price family’s compensation is knowing how much joy the tree brings to others and that their name will go down in history as providers of the iconic tree.

The 2021 Rockefeller Christmas tree’s original home is in Elkton, Maryland and tree was cut down on Thursday, November 11th, before arriving at the Rockefeller Center on Saturday, November 13th.

More on the Price family and their prized tree

WNBC-TV reported that the tree was growing on the property of homeowners Devon and Julie Price.

They were approached by the head gardener for the Rockefeller Center, Erik Pauze, who passed by the tree and thought it would be perfect as a Christmas tree.

Upon being approached the family were reportedly hesitant to donate the tree and Devon Price initially said “no way, you can’t have it'”.

Although, upon reflection, they decided to donate the tree and are now happy to have done so: “We were very surprised, but we are happy to be able to share it with everyone,” Julie Price explained.

“It’s a special tree, and it will be beautiful at Rockefeller Center, and I hope everybody enjoys it,” she concluded.

How big is the 2021 Rockefeller Christmas tree?

The Associated Press reports that 2021 will mark the first time that the Rockefeller Christmas tree has come from Maryland. The tree is also estimated to be about 85 years old, 79-feet tall and weighs 12 tons.

The tree’s 46-inch trunk has now been cut and it has been crane lifted onto a truck as it makes its way to Manhattan.

The process of installing the decorations and lights will then be the next step before the tree lighting will take place on December 1st in a live TV broadcast.

It will be displayed in Rockefeller Plaza until Sunday, January 16th. The tree will then be donated to a ‘Habitat for Humanity chapter’ near Elkton after the Christmas celebration.

The Rockefeller Center Christmas tree was decorated for the first time back in 1931. Each year, more than 8 kilometers of garlands are lit on the branches of this magical tree, selected in several states! The poster tells interesting and funny facts about the main Christmas tree of the city.

The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree is New York City's main New Year's Eve item that draws tourists like a magnet every year. It rises above the beloved ice rink and the statue of Prometheus from the distant 30s of the last century. Do you think you know everything about this magical attribute of the holiday?

The history of the New York New Year tradition

The first Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center was erected back in 1931. This year was significant not only for New York, but for the whole of America. A huge beautiful Christmas tree then marked the end of the Great Depression and the beginning of a new life for each of the inhabitants of New York and America. Workers and construction workers who were busy building the Rockefeller Center itself erected a 20-foot Christmas tree to show the world that they had money to pay their bills.

1931 Rockefeller Center Tree

In 1931, they decorated the huge fir tree with cranberries, paper garlands, and tin cans. In a word, everything that was at hand. The opening of the New Year tree in 1931 is not considered official. Strictly speaking, it was just an initiative of the workers, which attracted the leadership and administration of the city. The official installation and opening of the New Year tree took place as early as 1933. The economic situation in the country and in New York has more or less improved, so the forest beauty has “grown up” to 50 feet. Today, the Rockefeller Center New Year's Tree is New York City's main Christmas tree, symbolizing much more than the magic of a new year and the beginning of a new one. It is a symbol of patriotism (after all, it is traditionally decorated with many US national flags) and the continuity of traditions. When outdoors at low temperatures, it is not necessary to water it.

The world's most expensive Christmas trees - ProHotelia - online hospitality business

The owners of London's Claridge's hotel have a tradition: every year they turn to a famous designer with a request to make an exclusive Christmas tree that will delight the guests' eyes.

John Galliano, Alber Elbaz, Callie Ellis had a hand in creating a festive atmosphere in Claridge's. It is not known how much the collaboration with the fashion guru costs the hotel, but it is clear that we are talking about tens of thousands of pounds. However, in history there are cases when much more impressive sums were spent on Christmas trees. In the Forbes rating - 9Christmas trees, whose cost would have amazed even Santa Claus. The year 2010 turned out to be the “richest” for expensive Christmas trees, it was then that the largest number of price records among Christmas beauties was recorded.

Jeweled Christmas tree

Cost: $11 million

The world's most expensive Christmas tree in the world, Emirates Palace, 2010 Dabi in 2010. The cost of the tree itself did not exceed several thousand dollars, but in the case of Christmas tree decorations, the bill was already in the millions: pearls, gold, diamonds, sapphires, and emeralds were used to create them. Not only precious balls were hung on the Christmas tree, but also jewelry: watches, bracelets, necklaces. Such a pompous celebration of Christmas in a Muslim country seems unreasonable, but the Emirates Palace administration is guided not by national customs, but by the requests of wealthy guests. So, the hotel has a vending machine that sells gold bars, and the price includes the use of a private jet.

Golden Christmas tree

Cost: $4. 2 million

About 40 kg of gold was spent on the creation of this Christmas tree

Japanese jeweler Ginza Tanaka has been surprising the audience with thematic Christmas masterpieces for several years. For example, in 2007, he cast a 20-kilogram golden Santa Claus, and a year later, a golden tree costing more than $ 1.5 million appeared. Last year, Tanaka surpassed himself by presenting to the public a Christmas tree, which took about 40 kg of noble metal. In appearance, it looks more like a multi-tiered carousel than a tree. Instead of horses - 50 figurines of Disney cartoon characters: Cinderella, The Little Mermaid, Pinocchio. And, of course, Mickey Mouse: Tanaka has been indifferent to this character for a long time and already managed to make a golden copy of it several years ago.

Flower tree

Cost: $1.8 million

A Christmas tree made from hundreds of miniature dried roses with diamonds

For a Christmas tree to cost astronomical sums, it does not have to be gigantic in size. In 2007, in one of the shopping centers of the Japanese network Takashimaya, a tiny Christmas tree went on sale, which only a millionaire could afford to buy. Its design was developed with the participation of the French flower boutique Claude Quincaud. The tree consisted of several hundred miniature dried roses. On the petals of each of them, like dew drops, were diamonds brought from Australia and South Africa - about 400 pieces in total, weighing 100 carats. A nice addition was a Teddy bear with a diamond pendant. However, there were no people who wanted to buy this Christmas souvenir.

Diamond tree

Cost: $1.005 million

Six-meter diamond spruce

Hanging toys on a Christmas tree is the last century: diamonds look much better on it. Apparently, representatives of the Singapore jewelry house Soo Kee proceeded from such considerations, having decided to create a Christmas tree worth more than a million dollars. For its decoration, 21,798 diamonds with a total weight of 913 carats were used. 3762 crystal beads were placed on graceful twigs. Almost five hundred light bulbs illuminated all this splendor. The height of the tree reached six meters, weight - three tons. Installed in a large shopping center, the Christmas tree was under round-the-clock protection, but there were no people who wanted to encroach on diamond jewelry.

Capitol Tree

Cost: about $1 million

Christmas tree near Rockefeller Center

The main Christmas tree in the United States is unofficially considered the one that shines with light bulbs on Rockefeller Plaza in the center of New York. For the right of primacy, the spruce, whose place is at the Washington Capitol, may well argue with her.

The main US Christmas tree is located at the Washington Capitol

Nursery-grown tree sometimes has to be transported to the Congress building across the country, the tree height can exceed 20 m, and thousands of light bulbs are required to decorate the giantess, which must be firmly fixed on thorny branches. It is not surprising that its transportation, installation and design cost the state treasury a round sum. On the other hand, a tree brings so much joy to people that it is not a pity to spend a million dollars on it: the solemn ceremony of lighting the fires becomes a holiday in itself.

Swarovski Christmas tree

Price: about $500,000

Swarovski Christmas tree installed in Hong Kong

In order to justify the title of the main specialist in rhinestones, Swarovski every year amuses fans of its products with designer Christmas trees that shimmer with rainbows . The most remarkable of them was collected in 2010 in the center of Hong Kong. The Christmas tree was a cone thirty meters high. On its face, a pattern was applied, composed of more than 20 million gold and silver Swarovski crystals, specially delivered from Austria. In daylight, the “tree” did not look very impressive, but in the evening and at night, when the backlight was on, the tree made a great impression: tourists admitted that from afar it could well be confused with a Hong Kong skyscraper.

Charity tree

Cost: $500,000

Christmas tree created by jeweler Steve Quick

Unlike his eastern colleagues, American jeweler Steve Quick decided to create a Christmas tree that was supposed to bring not only aesthetic pleasure, but also practical benefit. Made of 18-carat gold, the tree was covered with a scattering of diamonds, which played the role of crisp snow. At the top was a platinum star set with a 4.52-carat diamond. For a couple of weeks, the tree languished in a shop window, and then it was put up for auction on eBay. All proceeds from the sale went to the American Cancer Society. Steve Quick also took care of those who could not afford such an expensive purchase: he developed budgetary silver-plated and gold-plated small copies of the Christmas tree for $20 and $25, respectively.

Tiffany Christmas tree

Price: €350,000

Christmas tree decorated by Tiffany & Co

In 2010, many of them changed their habit and stayed at home. The Milanese motivated their decision, in particular, by the fact that a new landmark has appeared on Piazza del Duomo - a Christmas tree, presented to the fashionable capital by the jewelry company Tiffany & Co. At the base of the tree, decorated with tens of thousands of lanterns, was a store decorated in the style of the famous pale turquoise box. Part of the profits from sales was donated to charity. Despite this, the rector of the Milan Cathedral expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that a commercial organization interferes with the traditions of the bright Christian holiday.

Alcohol Tree

Alcohol Tree at London's Sofitel

London's Sofitel management never forgets that alcohol libations are just as important as gifts during the December holidays . In 2010, an unusual Christmas tree was installed in the hotel lobby, which was a structure made of dark gray metal. Instead of balls and candles, small bottles of Louis XIII cognac gleamed on it.
