In 1977, the American Broadcasting Company (ABC) gambled that a 12-hour miniseries based on Alex Haley’s best-selling novel, “Roots,” would be of interest to the general American audience. In an unprecedented move, ABC scheduled the series to be broadcasted over eight consecutive nights.

The gamble paid off as roughly half of the Americans alive in 1977 watched at least part of the series.

The “Roots” miniseries was a cultural phenomenon that influenced millions of viewers to research their own roots. While writing the book, Haley did a lot of genealogy research at the National Archive, and after the series aired, letters to the National Archive tripled and applications to use the facilities increased by 40%.

If you are interested in your own family history, a good place to start is to create a family tree.

Family Tree Chart (Click on image to modify online)

A family tree is a visual representation of a person’s lineage, tracing relationships to common ancestors. Visually similar to an org chart, this diagram is usually presented in a tree structure starting with one individual as the root. From the root, lines representing branches terminate in boxes representing leaves. Each leaf represents individual family members with information such as birth, marriage, and death dates.

A family tree diagram or genealogy chart makes it easy to record the people, places, and events that make up your family history and then share it with others. Learn how to draw a family tree (or get started faster with a few examples of family trees).

Why create a family tree?

If you are even a little bit interested in your ancestry and if you would like to gain some insight into who you are and where you came from, you may want to create a genealogy chart.

There are many reasons to make your own family trees:

  • It gives you a connection to your heritage.
  • It can help you trace genetics and family health concerns.
  • It is a good exercise for learning your family history in relation to historical events.
  • It is a good way to pique your children’s interest so they will want to learn about ancestors and preserve family stories.
  • It can be fun!

How to draw a family tree chart

A family tree can be as simple or as complicated as you want it to be.

A simple genealogy chart may include you, your parents, your grandparents, and your great-grandparents. A complicated family tree chart may include you, your parents, your siblings, aunts and uncles, cousins, and so on.

How far you go and who you include is up to you.

Getting started

Before you jump in and start drawing your family tree, you may want to do a little planning. For example, you might ask yourself:

  • How far do you want to go back?
  • Is there somebody in your family who already has this information to give you a starting point?
  • What type of information do you want to include on each leaf (births, marriages, deaths)?
  • Do you want to add pictures of your ancestors to each leaf? Where can you find these pictures?

You also may want to determine in which direction you will draw the tree. In nature, trees grow from the ground to the sky, but on paper or the computer screen, family trees can develop from the bottom up, the top down, or horizontally. It could be a good idea to look at some examples of family trees to help you decide how your tree will be drawn.

There is not a single family tree definition that dictates what has to be included or what the family tree should look like. But note that if you simply want to chart relationships without digging too deeply, you may want to draw a simple kinship diagram instead. Kinship diagrams use basic symbols, lines, and letters to represent relationships to help you visualize your lineage.

1. Gather information about your family

Write down what you know, ask family members to fill in the gaps, and find pictures and documents. Visit libraries and online genealogy sources to search for census records, news stories, land deeds, and other documents that can verify your ancestry.

Remember that you can only go back so far because of the limited availability of reliable records. You may have heard of some people saying that they have traced their lineage all the way to Adam and Eve. But in reality, it is very hard to find accurate records older than a few hundred years because many records have been destroyed in fires, floods, acts of war, and simple negligence. Some areas of the world were better at keeping and preserving records than others, so how far you can go back will depend on where your family came from. Most family tree outlines trace ancestry back three or four generations because of the limited information.

2. Draft a family tree outline

Compile all of the information you have and create an outline. Start drawing from yourself to your ancestors, or start with the oldest ancestor you know about and trace forward to you.

You can draw your family tree freehand using pen and paper or create a family tree online using Lucidchart and our family tree diagram maker. Through this visual workspace, you can select a family tree template online and modify it with a few simple clicks.

3. Add information to each leaf

Each family member will be represented by a shape connected by lines to represent relationships. Typically a box or rectangle is used to represent your relatives, but you can use any shape that you want to use. Each shape is a leaf on the tree. The shape you decide to use as leaves should be consistent and sized to include the information that you plan to put on your family tree chart.

Place pictures, important event dates, and any other information you want to include in your leaf. As you put together this information, we would recommend a few additional guidelines:

Make it simple

If you want your family tree diagram to be useful to other members of your family, keep it simple so the information can be easily scanned and digested. Try to have each level of the tree represent a single generation so it is easy to trace relationships.

Don’t air your family’s dirty laundry

Who is going to be looking at this family tree diagram? There may be some family secrets that are not known to all living family members, so try to be sensitive about adding information that may not be too welcome to some of your relatives.

4.

Distribute your family tree diagram

This is the fun part—once you have finished your genealogy chart or family tree diagram, share it with your family members and give them a chance to reflect on their genealogy or learn new family stories. You can also invite them to provide additional information.

If you have created your family tree diagram online with Lucidchart, click “Share” to give family members access to collaborate on the visual with you or export your family tree to a number of file formats.

What is a family tree?

A family tree is a diagram that traces a person’s lineage by showing their ancestors and the generations of families that were built throughout the years.

Here is an example:

Based on its name, a family tree is structured like a tree, with the individual as the ‘root’ and their parents, grandparents, and ancestors making up the ‘leaves’ one level at a time.

In a family tree diagram, lines are used to connect family members and portray their relationships. Each family member is represented by a shape like a box or a circle with usually their photo inside.

What is the history of making family tree diagrams?

Genealogy or the study of families was the earliest form and application of family trees.

Historically, in Western civilizations, it was used to depict the ancestry of kings and nobles and verify their claims to royalty and power.

Family trees were maintained for years on end. The family tree of Confucius, for example, is already 2500 years old and is recorded as the world’s largest family tree with 2 million known descendants.

Today, genealogy is no longer just for aristocrats and important people, but anyone can now record their family history and maintain their family tree.

Should you create a family tree?

If you would like to know more about your family or you want to start recording your family history, then you should definitely make your own family tree.

It is also a great way to find out how your family story relates to important historical events.

More importantly, a family tree can help you identify genetic traits and conditions that run in your family.

4 steps to make a family tree diagram

To start creating your family tree diagram, simply follow these steps:

Step 1: Research and prepare information

The first thing you need to do before you start drawing your tree is to gather information about your family. You can check official birth records and DNA test results or simply talk to a relative or any member of your family who has knowledge about your ancestry.

Depending on how much information you will be able to acquire, it should help you determine how big and how detailed you want your family tree to be. Decide on how many generations you want to include and what information you will display for each family member, such as maiden name, year of birth, and role in the family.

Step 2: Draft your family tree drawing

To draw your family tree, start with a box representing yourself or the ancestor you want to begin with. Family trees can be diagrammed either from the top, bottom or horizontally as long as the root will always be yourself.

Here is an example of a family tree that’s drawn horizontally:

Add more boxes until all your family members have been included. Instead of drawing by hand, save time by using an intuitive design tool like Venngage’s Family Tree Maker to create your family tree. It is specifically made for both designers and non-designers alike so it is extremely easy to use.

Venngage’s Family Tree Maker can help you better visualize your family tree through its user-friendly editor with drag-and-drop features. It allows you to change and connect shapes, add labels, and edit colors and other design elements in a matter of seconds.

Venngage also has dozens of free diagrams and templates that you can customize to make the process even faster and easier.

Step 3: Label the leaves of the tree

Most family trees usually outline up to four generations only to make them easier to understand. That said, make sure that family members and their relationships with each other are clearly illustrated by labeling each box or ‘leaf’ correctly.

Indicate names and roles and any additional information you think may be relevant. Use lines to display relationships between spouses and connect parents with direct descendants like children and grandchildren.

Step 4: Design your family tree diagram

Now, this is the part where you enhance and finalize your family tree. Use family photos to add faces to the people you are trying to introduce with your tree. Color-coordinate shapes, lines, or labels to group generations, differentiate deceased from living relatives, and create a distinction between different relationships.

To make your family tree more attractive and engaging, you can design it with icons, graphics, illustrations, or backgrounds – all of which are provided for free in Venngage’s library.

Venngage also has a business feature called My Brand Kit that enables you to add your company’s logo, color palette, and fonts to all your designs with a single click.

For example, you can make a family tree diagram template reflect your brand design by uploading your brand logo, fonts, and color palette using Venngage’s branding feature.

Not only are Venngage templates free to use and professionally designed, but they are also tailored for various use cases and industries to fit your exact needs and requirements.

A business account also includes the real-time collaboration feature, so you can invite members of your team to work simultaneously on a project.

Venngage allows you to share your family tree online as well as download it as a PNG or PDF file. That way, your design will always be presentation-ready.

How to draw up a family tree correctly sample diagram

From old, yellowed photographs, beautiful and intelligent faces look at us - the faces of our ancestors. But already after two or three generations we forget who these people are, who they are to us, what they mean in our life. In order not to lose the connection of generations, it is important to learn how to work with your pedigree correctly.

A short introduction: a useful habit is to write down

Family memory is not only photographs, it can be said about any treasured family item. An old coal samovar on a modern table looks ... nice. But it is a completely different matter if the history of the samovar is based on living stories of ancestors! Therefore, it makes sense to make a habit: write down the stories of grandparents, moms and dads, great-grandparents, uncles and aunts. Great-grandchildren may not have time to personally meet great-grandfathers. But the younger generation will still be able to recognize them if there are audio or video recordings in which relatives remain alive and healthy, talking about their lives.

Creating the basis of a family tree

This is how professional ethnographers record information in live communication. But how to create the very basis on which you can put on the clothes of oral stories, family traditions? Where can I get information, find out the exact dates, names and positions? The answer is simple - in the archives, and help can be found on social networks, where many groups of genealogists are active.

How to draw a genealogical tree

Novice researchers may have difficulties with graphically correct presentation of information. Therefore, today we will touch on this topic.

First of all, decide who will be the "end user" of the information. From a psychological point of view, it is important to start introducing the child to the questions of his pedigree from early childhood, kindergarten and even toddler age, gradually changing the form of presenting information.

It is for a child of preschool or primary school age that the “artistic” version of the family tree is more suitable, when a real tree is drawn, real leaves on its branches. However, it is not necessary to draw - design options depend on individual tastes, creative preferences and imagination, you can also download a ready-made template from the network.

” But here comes the problem – most family tree diagrams are wrong!

For example, look at this scheme that we found on the Internet

Outwardly, it looks understandable to a child, but even a child can ask a logical question: "dad"? In fact, it's the other way around!"

” Indeed, on the contrary! The general pattern of building genealogical trees is that the roots depict the first of the ancestors known to us, the most distant in time from us.

Family tree of Queen Victoria of England

“Another rule of scientific genealogy is that trees are built along the male line.

For example, the children of married women are depicted on the tree of their father, that is, the husband of this woman; they are not marked on the family tree of the parental family of this woman.

Important: it is on the male line in our tradition that all types of fixing genealogy are built: genealogical schemes, generational paintings, and already described genealogical trees. The rest in the design of the family tree is a matter of creativity.

”On the genealogical tree for each person, you should write the last name, first name, patronymic, date of birth and death, if the person is no longer alive.

How to build a pedigree chart

The principle of building a pedigree chart in general terms resembles working with a family tree. Creativity, of course, is less - there is no picturesqueness, artistry of a genealogical tree.

” But from the point of view of the spatial organization of information, there are important differences: the family tree is necessarily built from the bottom up, and the scheme can be ascending (from bottom to top), descending (from top to bottom) and even lateral (from left to right).

Generational painting

In my opinion, for an adult conducting genealogical research, the most convenient form of fixing new information is generational painting. For teenagers, the ability to make generational paintings can also become a bright addition to the course of Russian history.

So, generational painting is attractive precisely because it allows you to completely painlessly make additions about any person, without violating the structure and design. Its other advantage is that it is generational painting that allows you to record absolutely any available information about a person. Standardization in it concerns only the structure of the location of relatives.

Let me explain this with an example - a fragment of the Zakharovs' generational painting.

Appetite comes with eating. It is quite possible that, having taken up the compilation of a family tree or generational painting with your child this summer, you will want to ask your questions. Since 1994, there has been a public organization in Novosibirsk - the Novosibirsk Historical and Genealogical Society, which unites like-minded people and provides methodological assistance in compiling a genealogy. The society is represented by a group in the social network VKontakte >>>>

A family tree is a great way to visualize your family history. In the process of creating the tree, you will be able to learn more about the life path of your ancestors. Communicate with close and distant relatives, hear from them a lot of interesting things about the fate of your loved ones. You can arrange the tree you create in the form of a real work of art and hang it like a picture on the wall. How to create such a tree for a schoolboy and arrange it in a way that is pleasing to the eye? There are special templates for this, and below we will analyze how to choose a family tree template for a student, and what we need for this.

What is a family tree?

As you know, the term "family tree" means a genealogical (genealogical) tree, which schematically presents family ties between members of the same genus. A family tree is the most common form of visual representation of a person's lineage. It usually includes a field for each person, and his relationship to other relatives, expressed in the form of connecting lines. In addition to the person's name, such a field can also contain associated dates, place of birth, and other useful information.

Typically, one generation in a family tree represents one level. Thanks to this, it is clearly visible which ancestors preceded each of the generations.

A horizontal line between two boxes indicates a marriage. The downward arrow from the couple indicates children from that marriage. While most family trees grow vertically, they can also grow sideways. Later in the article, I will present several family tree templates for schoolchildren.

The founder of the genus (ancestor) is quite often represented in the form of a tree root. The trunk - representatives of the main line of the genus (usually in the male line). The branches of the family tree are the lines of genealogy, and the leaves of such branches are their descendants.

Many often mistakenly refer to the "family tree" as the family "tree", which is fundamentally wrong. Genealogy recognizes the term "family tree", and the name "family tree" is a distortion of the professional thesaurus.

How to create a family tree diagram

How to create a family tree of a student at school? Let's go through the steps to create a family tree diagram:

  1. On a separate piece of paper, write down all the people you want to capture on your family tree. You can start the tree from yourself (you will be the base of the tree). On a piece of paper, write down the details of your family (parents, siblings), then go to your parents' parents (grandparents, uncles and aunts, cousins, etc. ). You can stop there, but you can go further. Make sure you don't miss anyone. Your family tree is an important part of your family history, so give it enough attention;
  2. Fill in the gaps about relatives by doing research. If there is no information on any of the relatives, try to conduct your own research. Look for information on the net, ask old relatives and friends, visit local archives. It will be exciting;
  3. Decide what information you want to display on the family timeline. In addition to the first and last name, you can include the date of birth and death, the date of marriage (marriage), place of birth, and so on. Adding this data will make the tree you create more informative;
  4. Consider whether you will include photos in your tree. If you have access to photos of your ancestors, you can insert small photos of them into the tree you create. The use of a photo is justified in the case of a small tree, otherwise its size, together with the photographs, will come out really huge;
  5. Start drawing a tree from your generation, which includes you, your parents, brothers and sisters. The shape of your tree is up to you. If you want to create a vertical tree with a wide top, start drawing it from the bottom on a wide piece of paper. You can also start on the left side if you want the tree to grow to the right.

One of the possible diagrams for your tree

For example, write your name below. On your behalf draw a line a little higher to your mother. Then draw another line on your behalf, to your father. Draw a horizontal line connecting your father and mother.

If you are a student and have brothers and sisters, draw lines from your father and mother to them.

If your brothers and sisters have a couple, then write it down. Connect such a pair with a horizontal line.

If your siblings have children, write them down and connect them with lines to their parents

  • Enter the generation of your parents and grandparents. It can be a sister (brother) of one of your parents who has a husband (wife) and so on. Connect such a couple with a horizontal line, and draw lines to their children.

For example, above your mother's name, enter the name of her mother (your grandmother) and father (grandfather). Connect them with a line between you and your mother. Do the same for your father.

If your mother (father) had brothers and sisters, then add a line from your grandparents to them. Add to such brothers and sisters the names of their couples (husband or wife). Connect such a pair with a horizontal line.

  • Decide how far you can go. As it grows, such a tree can become huge. Perhaps, at first, you should limit yourself to your close relatives (you, brothers and sisters, dad and mom, grandparents).
  • Decorate your tree beautifully and make it unique. Once the text part of the tree is complete, get a little creative and draw your tree nicely. Take a huge sheet of drawing size, use a beautiful felt-tip pen or paint to decorate your tree. Get a little creative, make your tree colorful.

The best family tree templates for students

If your student child has been given the task of creating his own family tree, he will be helped by hint templates that visually display how this or that tree might look. We offer you a family tree - templates for filling, which can be used in a graphic editor, or immediately printed on a printer.

You can download this template for filling in the family tree for free. To do this, just hover over the template you like, right-click, and select "Save Image As".

You can also use the English language template for a student that displays a family tree.

If you use a graphic editor, you can insert photos of your relatives into the empty fields of the template. The result will be printed on the printer.

Conclusion

Above, we discussed what a family tree is, how to create it, and also provided a template for a student that clearly demonstrates how a family tree should look like. Use the templates we have provided to create your family tree, which will be a visual representation of your family's genealogy. If you do not want to draw a family tree yourself, use Ancestry, Myheritage, Findmypast level services to create a family tree online.

We are accustomed to receiving such information from older generations and accumulating it. Such information helps to find out the history of the genus, organize intra-family ties and find out the predisposition to certain diseases.

The process of collecting data and designing such a scheme is not easy, it requires special skills and following instructions.

Today we will talk about how to draw and draw a family tree correctly, present a template and diagram, and give useful tips and parting words.

Definition

We have a relational structure that describes family relationships within the same genus. She received this name due to the fact that the connection between family members is depicted in the form of tree branches. At the base is the founder of the clan or the ancestor, and on the lines emanating from the base are different families formed from his children and grandchildren.

The need to study one's surname came to us from antiquity. Even in the Neolithic era, people followed the connections within the community, because they knew that mixing the same blood could lead to the birth of children with serious disabilities. That is why husbands looked for wives in neighboring tribes. When it was necessary to preserve certain features, such as hair or eye color, the bride was chosen from a certain circle. Knowing one's roots was necessary to maintain family ties.

Why is it so important to know how to make a genealogical or family tree of a family? The answer is simple: since ancient times, close blood ties meant not only belonging to the same dynasty, but also served as a symbol of strong relationships, as well as indivisible traits inherent in each member of the community, the representative of the family.

Many traits of character and behavior are formed from childhood and depend on the environment - the testaments of our grandmothers, grandfathers, mothers and fathers. These include:

  • Habits.
  • The structure of thinking.
  • Behavior model.
  • Features of speech.

In each of our ancestors - often unrealized opportunities. They can manifest themselves in us - to a greater or lesser extent. Therefore, it is important to know the history of your surname, to carefully preserve the memory of your roots. In some cases, compiling a family tree of one's family tree helps to reveal hidden characteristics that require development throughout a person's life.

The inheritance of such traits cannot and should not be direct. Sometimes it manifests itself through one knee, and sometimes even less often. Knowing the family tree will help you learn more not only about your surroundings, but also about yourself. And the process of collecting material will not only unite the family, but also give a chance to establish contact with loved ones.

What types of visual schemes exist

In total, it is customary to distinguish two ways of displaying blood ties. Let's consider each of them.

Rising structure

This option includes the design in a routine way: from younger generations to older ones. In the role of the starting point, it is customary to designate the drafter of the project, that is, you. This method of compiling a family tree is the simplest. It is suitable for those who have just started looking for information about their roots. To get started, you will need information about your father and mother, grandparents, and so on. The convenience lies in the fact that you can add the missing component at any time by displaying a new branch. We recommend using this method in the initial stages of studying your family.

Descending

This variant is characterized by the reverse order of records. The starting point is the most distant ancestor - the ancestor. From it, rays are drawn, diverging to the sides. These are his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, etc. come from them. To organize such a structure, you will need extensive knowledge about your last name. This method can be applied in the final stages of studying your family.

The best option for beginners is to use the first scheme. Gradually collecting and accumulating the necessary information, you will be able to organize a large structure. After the accumulated data can be transferred to the descending schema.

The next thing you should pay attention to when compiling a family tree is the line of inheritance. They can be represented by two types of tables:

  • Direct - includes you, your mom and dad, grandparents, and so on.
  • Inverse - to create such a project, you will need information about brothers and sisters, nephews, including cousins, second cousins, etc.

Structures of this type can be drawn up both in a general form, that is, for male and female representatives, and for tracking blood ties only on the paternal or maternal side. In this case, the emerging relationship is called unilinear.

Genealogical tree as a gift

In addition to self-development, getting the missing information about one's own roots and family unity, such a project can be a wonderful surprise for any person who is interested in the history of his family name, wants to learn more about his ancestors.

If you want to make an unusual gift, you will need a scheme with a corresponding picture. For this, a structure of any complexity is suitable. Beginners should use the easiest way. You can draw up a project both with your own hands, by drawing an image on a thick sheet of paper, or using special software. The first option will be much more expensive - your diligence, participation is especially noticeable in it, it is much more pleasant to receive it. But this does not negate the value of the printed version created on the computer. In both cases, you will have to do a lot of work, looking for information about the representatives of the genus.

How to make a family tree with a diagram as a gift? To do this, you can purchase a special book in an elegant binding.

This project will be especially useful for:

  • Your children - it will tell the younger generation about their ancestors.
  • Distant relatives - for them, you can prepare a reverse descending table, which will show brothers, sisters, cousins, etc.
  • Progenitors - a non-standard design option in the form of an hourglass is possible. To draw up such an option, you can combine two methods and draw a diagram from the recipient of the present to you, using your grandmother or grandfather as a key figure.

You can also take such a common pattern as a "butterfly". In it, the basis is a married couple from which ascending and descending branches are conducted to ancestors and descendants.

A less popular but more detailed way of describing blood ties is the pie chart. This scheme is in demand abroad. At the same time, you will not often meet her on the territory of the Russian Federation. The bottom line is to combine the ascending and descending components. Consider the main design steps to learn how to properly compile a family tree and make it original.

  • Use a fan as a base - one fourth of the circle.
  • You can also draw several centralized circles that will include both ancestors and descendants.
  • Another way is to divide the circle and create a unique genealogy project by combining both ways of describing a surname.

Any of the proposed options can be decorated with pictures, notes. You can add fun facts from the overall history to the project by linking them to the details of the decor.

What you need to create a scheme yourself

First you need to study the family archive. Try to find all the surviving photographs and papers that testify to blood ties. The most important will be:

  • Employment books.
  • Certificates.
  • Documents.
  • Marriage certificates.
  • Certificates.

Such documents will serve as a starting point for further searches, collection of information for the family tree. All found papers and photographs should be scanned and stored not only on a computer, but also on external media, such as a flash drive. This will help protect content from accidental deletion, even if your PC crashes and all the information on it is lost.

The next step is the most important part of the process. This is an appeal to your family and friends. There are no specific rules for compiling a family tree, but this stage remains one of the most important, since it allows you to learn information firsthand. Before the visit, we advise you to decide on a list of questions and write them down so as not to miss anything. The following data may be useful for you to create a draft family scheme:

Date of birth of an ancestor.

  • Place and time of their work.
  • Did they study. If yes, where and at what time.
  • Whom they were married to or married to.
  • Number of children, their full names and dates of birth, at least approximate.
  • If the descendant is no longer alive, it is necessary to find out in what year he/she passed away, where he/she is buried.

From this it follows that the most useful information is the date and place of an incident. It is these data that will help you to contact the archive for details in the future.

In addition, due attention should be paid to the stories of relatives themselves. This will allow you to learn useful information about your ancestors, their achievements, legends passed down from generation to generation.

To save all the details when compiling a family tree, we recommend using a conversation recorder. To do this, you can use both a voice recorder and a smartphone equipped with a similar function.

After the conversation, you should listen to the recording several times in order not to lose sight of any important moments and milestones in the development of your family. Further, the information received must be structured and recorded in a specially designated notebook or on electronic media. In the second case, we advise you to create a separate folder into which you will transfer all data and photos. It is also worth duplicating it to an external drive or a cloud service such as Yandex.Disk or Google.Docs. This will allow you to have access to information anywhere in the world.

An in-depth and detailed search for information that will help you recreate the full picture can take months, and sometimes several years of painstaking work. How to chart a family tree when time is short and you need help? To speed up the process, you can connect the rest of your relatives: brothers, sisters or parents.

In this case, each participant must choose a specific branch and work on it. After each of you has finished collecting information, the received material should be put together and organize a complete system. This approach will not only speed up the process, but also gain deeper knowledge. In addition, you will have a chance to build relationships with relatives who are involved in the search.

Tree of life: how to make a genealogy using computer programs

Collecting data on ancestors is a labor-intensive and time-consuming task. If you use the ascending type of project, then by the seventh generation you will count more than a hundred representatives of the same surname.

Using notepads or notebooks to store information is impractical. At any moment you can lose the carrier, and with it the information collected during the hard work. To simplify the work, you can use machine databases such as Microsoft Office Excel or Access. You can also start developing a project in specialized software that is designed to create family trees. So you can easily create a beautiful and well-structured diagram.

Such services are divided into online and offline utilities. The first allow you to store all the information on the Internet and access it from any device. Among the shortcomings can be identified a short shelf life. Typically, such sites allow you to accumulate information for no more than five years, after which all materials will be deleted. The second type of software stores all data on the computer on which the application is installed.

Programs can also be divided into paid and free. The first ones have richer functionality, the second ones are more profitable to use if you are not ready to spend money on the design of the scheme.

Today we told you how to make a family tree for a nice family gift, what you need for this, and also gave useful tips and parting words. Do not delay and start collecting information right now. So you will have the opportunity to get more information and get to know your ancestors better.

How to draw a genealogical tree of a family scheme

Beautiful and intelligent faces look at us from old, yellowed photographs - the faces of our ancestors.

Looking through childhood photos or listening to the stories of parents, you may involuntarily become interested in your pedigree. Even in ancient times, it was compiled in the form of a family tree: this is a convenient way to present information. Drawing up a family tree is even asked at school for a lesson in the world around us or kindergarten, so you need to know how to create a family tree with your own hands.

What is a family tree

The very concept of "family tree" is a list of people who are related to each other. The enumeration occurs according to a hierarchy based on the years of life of people and how they relate to each other. On the trunk of a tree, a married couple is indicated, standing at the head of the clan. Then they place their children, grandchildren and cousins, sisters. The generations are on the same level. This option is classic when the construction goes from ancestors to descendants.

In addition to the main option, how to draw a family tree, there are several more:

  1. Personally . Parents, grandparents, and other relatives act as branches. This is convenient in that the whole family is indicated along the line of only one person. It will be difficult to supplement such a tree.
  2. Family tree . In this case, relatives on the paternal or maternal side may be indicated separately, because the surnames of the spouses before marriage were different.

How to draw a tree according to the pattern

There are many websites in Russian and English on the Internet where you can find special family tree templates. After downloading and printing them, you just need to fill in the empty spaces with photos of relatives according to the specified location. It will look more neat if you use Photoshop. To do this, open the template in this program and insert photos there. The recommended layout format is png. This is an extension for pictures, which is very convenient to work with in Photoshop.

How to draw a family tree

How to draw a family tree? To do this, it is better to divide the work into several stages. The first step is to find out about all the genetic relatives. This is the most crucial stage, because the amount of information depends on how complete the finished database will be. If you suddenly miss someone, then the meaning of the tree will be partially lost. If the collection of information was successful, then it remains to choose the option of constructing a scheme - personally from oneself, from the founder of the clan, or several surnames at once.

How to make a family tree

Before compiling your family tree, it is worth making a preliminary diagram of all relatives, distributing them by degree of relationship. The main thing is to decide on how many generations you plan to go back. For owners of a large family, it is better to limit yourself to the closest relatives and not to enter great-uncles and grandparents, otherwise you can expand the family tree and make side branches in it. They will serve to record more distant relatives - cousins, sisters, grandparents.

There are a lot of concepts of kinship: in addition to blood, they reflect marriage or spiritual connection. In the first case, people have a common ancestor, in the second they are married, and the third includes such forms of kinship as nepotism and twinning. The main one is consanguineous - several degrees of kinship are distinguished in it. One of them is a generation, the chain of which already makes up the line.

Such a chain includes as many degrees as there were births in the family, i.e. son or daughter - the first degree, grandson or granddaughter - the second, etc. Each of them must follow each other in order. It turns out that the construction goes on by generations - from the oldest to the youngest, or vice versa, in the case of the implementation of the scheme personally from oneself. On the main branch, all siblings, grandparents should be indicated, and already on the side branches - cousins or second cousins. So the distance between relatives will reflect the distance of their relationship.

How to build a family tree

Once you've got a sample diagram with a list of relatives, you need to decide how best to draw a family tree. There are several options here:

  1. Classic , when the main bearer of the surname is indicated at the bottom of the trunk. In most cases, this is a married couple, such as grandparents or great-grandparents (you can go even further). Further, all their children, grandchildren and other relatives are indicated in order. It is better to place your line on the main branch, i.e. the one by which you will come to your parents and specifically yourself. In the lateral branches will be located cousins and second cousins.
  2. Personal tree . In this option, you yourself are the basis, i.e. family tree maker. Next come the parents, grandparents on both lines, and so on. This will be the main thread. On the side, it is worth reflecting the sisters or brothers of the parents, their children, grandchildren, etc.
  3. Family tree . This option is the most voluminous of all. Here you can reflect several names at once. It is interesting for the compiler himself to trace the line of father and mother. Before marriage, they had different surnames, but in relation to their children they have the same degree of relationship. For this reason, it is interesting to arrange the tree so that one half of the branches reflects the relatives of the father, and the other - the mother.

How to make a family tree on a computer

There are special programs for compiling a family tree. Some of them are online services where you can order or independently issue an unfilled sample with places for photos for free. It remains only to add pictures, download and, if necessary, print. Another option is to download a graphics editor to your computer and work in it. Among such programs, SimTree, RootsMagic, GenoPro, Family Tree Builder, GRAMPS stand out. The Russian analogue is the "Tree of Life".

Each of the programs has a set of specific functions that help you draw and then print a tree. Most of them already have sample templates to fill out. They are a table with cells or a picture. Some applications even offer to attach not only photos, but also audio or video recordings. For each family member, it is proposed to fill out a questionnaire, which indicates the basic data about him up to a description of his appearance or interesting biography facts.

How to draw a family tree

You need to start with how many and what generations you plan to draw. This is necessary in order to know in advance the number of branches on the tree. After this step, use the instructions on how to draw a family tree:

  1. Draw a thick trunk, using a soft, simple pencil so that you can erase the excess.
  2. Depending on the type of tree, write at the base of the trunk with the full name of one or more people. It can be parents, grandparents, or your child or yourself.
  3. Next, a little higher, draw branches for the rest of the relatives. Arrange them correctly - so that each next generation is slightly higher than the previous one.
  4. Draw as many branches as you know relatives. Consider the size of your sheet so that all the relationships that you want to include will fit.
  5. After finishing placing all the relatives, erase the extra lines, and circle the ones you need more boldly. At the end of the design, use colored pencils to make the drawing brighter.

A family tree is a great way to visualize your family's history.

  1. On a separate piece of paper, write down all the people you want to capture on your family tree. You can start the tree from yourself (you will be the base of the tree). On a piece of paper, write down the details of your family (parents, siblings), then go to your parents' parents (grandparents, uncles and aunts, cousins, etc.). You can stop there, but you can go further. Make sure you don't miss anyone. Your family tree is an important part of your family history, so give it enough attention;
  2. Fill in the gaps about relatives by doing research. If there is no information on any of the relatives, try to conduct your own research. Look for information on the net, ask old relatives and friends, visit local archives. It will be exciting;
  3. Decide what information you want to display on the family timeline. In addition to the first and last name, you can include the date of birth and death, the date of marriage (marriage), place of birth, and so on. Adding this data will make the tree you create more informative;
  4. Consider whether you will include photos in your tree. If you have access to photos of your ancestors, you can insert small photos of them into the tree you create. The use of a photo is justified in the case of a small tree, otherwise its size, together with the photographs, will come out really huge;
