how to make your own hands, diameter and which are best for budgerigars

Perches are a must-have accessory in a birdcage. The perch for the parrot is the place where he spends most of his time. Sitting on branches, birds eat, sleep, clean feathers, play and communicate with each other and with the owner. The health of the parrot's legs depends on the shape, size and material of the perch, so the choice of perches must be given close attention.

types of poles

of poles for parlishes for parliament different materials. The following perches are available in pet stores:

  1. Plastic. This is the most inappropriate type of perch. Plastic perches have a too smooth and hard surface. From constant contact with it, corns appear on the paws of the bird, and if the diameter is incorrectly selected, problems with the joints develop. In addition, the claws of the parrot do not wear down on the plastic, they grow more than the prescribed length, and they have to be cut. However, plastic structures can be useful if the parrot is sick. Plastic is easy to disinfect, and microorganisms do not survive on it.
  2. Wooden. This type is most popular with bird owners. Wooden perches are closest to natural perches - branches. The tree allows the parrot to grind its claws and beak in a natural way. In this case, preference should be given to untreated, rough branches; polished rods do less good for the birds.
  3. Cotton. They are a metal rod wrapped with cotton thread. Parrots often gnaw through the winding, they can swallow it or get tangled in it with their paws, therefore, at the first sign of damage, such a perch should be replaced with a new one.
  4. Cement. These devices are good for preventing beak and claw regrowth, but are too cold. With frequent sitting on them, the parrot may have problems with the joints, so they should be placed in places where the bird rarely sits.
  5. Volcanic pumice. These perches are also good against regrowth of claws and beak, but they have a too hard surface, and with prolonged use, the parrot may develop calluses on the paws. They should be placed in the cage at the same time as perches made of other materials or offered to birds from time to time.

How to make a parrot perch

Many owners make their own parrot perches. This procedure is simple even for a beginner and does not require large material costs. In addition, with the independent manufacture of perches, it is possible to choose the materials, size and shape of the structure that are suitable for a particular pet.

Permitted and prohibited tree branches

Perches are best made from wood: wooden structures are considered the most beneficial for birds. The best option would be to make perches from tree branches after minimal processing. However, not every tree is useful for a parrot. It is allowed to place branches of fruit trees and berry bushes in the cage (apple, cherry, cherry, sea buckthorn, raspberry, currant, mountain ash, plum, viburnum, apricot, citrus), aspen, white alder, willow, linden, beech, maple, hornbeam, birch , chestnut, ash, walnut, hazel.

Attention! Dangerous for birds are pear, poplar, lilac, bird cherry, oak, acacia, coffee tree, black elderberry, conifers.

Perch diameter

When resting, the parrot should wrap its fingers no more than 2/3 around the perch. The diameter of the perch for a budgerigar should be 15-18 mm (for juveniles - 8-10 mm), for medium-sized species - 15-30 mm, for large ones - 25-50 mm. It is advisable to place rods of different diameters in the cage so that the bird itself chooses the most suitable ones. The main rule is that when grabbing a branch, the parrot's claws do not close.

Making perches

Perch branches must be collected away from roads, industries and garbage dumps. Do not use branches of plants treated with toxic chemical compounds from pests. Twigs should not have traces of rot, mold and parasites. It is better to cut shoots from trees and shrubs, rather than collect from the ground.

The collected branches are washed with hot water and cleaned with a brush from dirt. If the bark is not damaged, it is not removed. You can soak the branches for 2-3 hours in cold water. To get rid of possible microorganisms and parasites, the twigs are scalded with boiling water or boiled for several minutes. After drying, they begin to make a perch.

To make your own parrot perch, you will need:

  • wood sawing tool;
  • tape measure.

The length of the perch should be such that its ends protrude a few centimeters beyond the cage. At the ends of the branches, cuts are made into which the bars of the cage will be inserted. For a tighter fit, the ends of the branch can be slightly filed. You can additionally strengthen the structure by tying a twig to the bars of the cage with a rope made of natural materials. Another option for fixing the perch is with screws with wide washers. In this case, cuts are not made on the branch, but instead they simply place the perch in the cage and screw screws into its ends from the outside. The diameter of the washer must be greater than the distance between the bars of the cage.

If the parrot spends a lot of time in the wild, you can make a perch so that the bird has its own place in the apartment where it can rest. This design is especially necessary for representatives of large and medium-sized species.

For arranging a perch, two thick horns are taken. They are fastened together with a straight strong branch, the ends of which are screwed to the branches of the horns with screws. For strength, the joints are tied with a jute rope. Holes for fasteners are drilled in the lower part of the horns and the structure is strengthened in the place where the parrot spends the most time.

Instead of spears, you can take T-shaped structures, assembled from two straight branches. A hole is drilled in a smaller branch and attached to the end of a larger branch with a screw. For reliability, the junction is tied with a jute rope.

Carabiners can be screwed into the perch branches and toys can be hung from them. You can also use a bolt to attach a half coconut shell and use it as a feeder or bather.

Placement of perches in the cage

Parrot perches are positioned so that the bird, sitting on them, does not touch the walls, floor and ceiling of the cage, as well as other perches, with its head, tail and wings. There should be at least 2 perches per bird, but you should not place too many branches in the aviary - the parrot needs room to fly. One perch is placed next to the feeder and drinker, but not above them; another one must be placed at the top of the cage - birds like to sleep, climbing higher. If several parrots live in the aviary, the branches are placed so that the birds sitting on them do not stain each other with droppings.

Perches are an important element of a bird's home and should be chosen responsibly. The state of health of the parrot depends on their size and material. It is better to use perches made from natural materials: they are harmless to birds and help grind down growing claws and beak. It is easy to make perches of the desired size and configuration with your own hands from tree branches and shrubs. Periodically, they should be washed and disinfected, and if necessary, replaced with new ones. How to make a tree in the nursery with your own hands

My daughter has always dreamed of having a magic tree in her nursery in her room so that she can sit and read books in it, climb the branches and sit on it. Of course, I was not ready to make such a dream come true, but what can you not do for the sake of your beloved child. I had to review a huge number of ready-made solutions on the Internet, and yet I decided to do it myself. I took characters and scenery from Walt Disney as the basis of my project. In the end, everything worked out for me and my daughter is very happy and happy with her new room!

It took me about 350 hours to make this set and decorate the room. I mostly did it on weekends or after work for 18 months. I was asked how this decoration is flammable, I want to say when choosing a material, I consulted with a fire protection engineer and chose the material that would be safe.

My wife suggested making a seating area in the middle of the tree. This complicated the whole project, but it turned out very well. Inside the tree, I created a seating area, which I lit up with a 12V lamp. The switch is located on the right inside the wall on the carpet.

12V light bulbs are inserted into the windows of the magic tree, the brightness of which is regulated by a switch at the entrance. At night, these windows act as a night lamp.

Before building the layout of the bedroom, I drew about 10 sketches, but they were all ugly. Here is my last sketch, which I settled on.

I created a layout of the room on a scale of 1:12, for this I used ordinary plywood and plasticine. After the layout was ready, I applied the grid in 25 mm increments.

This is what the children's room looked like before the renovation, which my daughter didn't like.

I knew that the repair would take several months and I would need a stable work table, which I made from a simple sheet of plywood and goats. For additional stability, the goats were screwed to the floor.

In order to create the room as in the layout, I drew grid lines to scale in 30 cm increments. The grid makes it possible to see where each of the elements should start and end.

After drawing the grid on the wall, draw the silhouette of the tree layout.

Once the shape was drawn on the walls and floors, I was ready to start welding!

In order for children to climb a tree, the frame must be rigid, so I used 9 mm and 3 mm steel reinforcement.

The process of making rings is very simple: clamp one end of the rebar in a vise and pull the other end down. Thus, the reinforcement is bent. We rearrange the reinforcement in a vice and bend further and so on until a full circle is obtained.

I needed electric and gas welding to weld the frame. To prevent smoke from accumulating in the room during welding, an industrial fan 75 cm in diameter was installed in the window.

I had to attend individual welding courses, but it was worth it.

Hobby welders.

I am a painstaking person, so I spent too much time making the frame, about 100-120 hours. Later, when I poured concrete, I concluded that it was not necessary to boil the frame so carefully, thereby saving time.

After unsuccessful attempts to use 6 mm shielded wire for cladding the carcass, I used an expanded metal machine.

I thought that this part of the frame would be easier and faster to sheathe, but no such luck.

Happy daughter. My bandaged hands are not shown here. At this stage of work, I spent about 175 hours.

I had wired the windows and doors in advance and installed the lights. As fixtures I used waterproof 12V landscape lights. The glasses of the lamps were sealed with adhesive tape to protect them from mechanical damage.

The concrete was mixed according to the following formula: 2 parts cement, 1 part water, 1 part polymer additives. The solution was applied to the frame with a conventional spatula. For texture, I used silicone bark and sculpting clay.

After unsuccessful experiments with concrete to make tree branches, I realized that it must be papier-mâché. As it turned out, this is a very simple and easy way to use.

The magic tree is ready to be painted. This stage was a difficult task, as I have very little experience in painting. At this stage, I spent about 225 hours.

Just like painting, I started with dark colors.

To obtain different shades, the paint was mixed with water and applied to the wood with a brush.

When I was walking with my children, I took pictures of trees. These photos have become for me an example for the selection of paint colors.

I painted the trunk of the magic tree with brown paint. In order to get the natural color of the "bark" of the tree, you need to clean it with a dry brush after the paint has dried.

In addition to the wood, the walls also needed to be painted.

Paints were mixed to paint the walls.

The easiest way to paint walls is with a roller.

A few years ago my father and I were laying parquet in his house, now he has helped me. In order for the floor to be warm, we put good insulation under the parquet.

When laying out, I drew this curve, as it was planned to lay a soft green carpet around the tree. To get such a curve, a wood jigsaw was used to trim the parquet.

I installed a glass handle on my bedroom front door.

It's time to make windows.

I used a jigsaw to cut the windows.

I pasted the cut out windows with paper using hot glue.

I used watercolors to add a dirty effect to the paper that acts as glass. When the light shines through the paper, you get the effect of aging.

The low voltage transformers that are connected to the window lights I installed right behind the switch. Thus, in each window the light will burn.

I used chisels to make the serifs.

In the store, I picked up fabulous fittings, with which I decorated the magic door.

To create the crown of the tree, I used artificial silk branches that I bought in a store. This turned out to be the most economical option.

Most of these plants I found on store shelves.

I cut plastic fern branches into pieces to make shoot branches.

I attached about 5 bird nests to the tree, this is one of them.
