How to make a Christmas tree in a text document. Types of quotation marks in Word
Quotation marks are a symbol, a punctuation mark, which must have a pair. It highlights quotations from a general text, words taken from other texts, or segments of words. It is also used to highlight the irony or figurative meaning of a word, its unusualness, a reference to something.
If the quotation uses one more expression enclosed in these symbols, then the latter will be of a different kind. For example: I received a telegram: βI am coming tonight. I will stay at the Troitsk Hotel.
There are several types of punctuation similar punctuation marks:
- "Christmas trees" or "French" they are also typographic;
- "Paws" or "German";
- "English double" and "single" (such a punctuation mark is rarely used in Russian literature and writing).
Herringbones are mainly used for printing. "Paws" - in texts written by a human hand. There are also "computer" or typewritten ones, in which the pattern of opening and closing quotes does not differ at all from each other. They are typed using the keyboard on the computer.
Microsoft Word uses French and English by default.
How to put Christmas trees, paws and other quotes from the keyboard
You can put quotes on the keyboard of a laptop or personal computer when typing in any version of Word (including 2010/2013/2016) or in another place in several ways.
"Christmas trees"
In this case, the key combination "Shift" + "2" is used. This method will work if the keyboard layout is Russian, and also when "Christmas Trees" are needed:
There is another method for printing this character. The method is not so often practiced, but it is better to know it too. We change the layout to English and type two letters "ab", then we click simultaneously on the buttons " Alt "+" X ". The opening symbol will turn out, and the opposite is done in the same way as the opening one, but we write β bb ".
βEnglishβ
If we type in English, then to highlight the word, use βShiftβ + βEβ:
To make single angle quotes, follow the instructions:
- change the language to English;
- hold down Β« Shift "and click on the letter" B "- you get an open corner;
- in order to close it, hold down " Shift "and click on the button" Yu ";
- then change the layout to Russian and enter the required word between them;
- we continue typing.
Quotation marks βpawsβ
This view cannot be set from the keyboard, only using autocorrect or ASCII code. We will talk about this further.
Use ASCII code
To set such characters, you can use a special character table that is not on the keyboard. Below is a picture and an explanation.
To use it, you should:
Necessary words are entered inside quotes.
Symbols in Word
In a word document, quotation marks can be set in another way. In the tab "Insert" there is an item " Symbol ".
It is located in the upper right corner just below Equation.
To use this method, you need:
You can use the character table not only in Word, to do this you need to start START and go to Programs - Accessories - Service . In Windows 10, it is enough to find the Standard section in START.
Further use is similar to working in Word.
Quotation marks in HTML
Separate mnemonics are used for html pages:
- "-";
- "-";
- &bdquo - ";
- “
- &rdquo - β;
- &lsquo-';
- &rsquo - '.
There is one more tag in HTML language. Thanks to him, all the text that will be enclosed inside this tag is framed with quotes. The tag is a small letter of the Latin alphabet "q".
And their appearance will depend on the attribute "lang" to be injected at the root of the HTML component. When the "lang" attribute looks like this - "lang="ru"", "Christmas trees" will be displayed in the final document.
Remember that all codes are set to the location in the hypertext markup where they should appear in the browser. Many browsers do not support Dependency of the output of certain characters on an attribute. It is recommended to use CSS layout.
Using autocorrect - how to change quotes in Word
You can auto-correct such punctuation marks so that you don't have to switch keyboards while typing. AutoCorrect helps increase text printing speed. To do this, use the instructions below:
- open a Word page;
- click on the "File" tab and go to " Settings" ";
- in Options, click on "Spelling" and press the key " AutoCorrect Options ";
- in the "Autoformat as you type" item, which you will see in the window that opens, check the box "Replace straight quotes with paired ones when you type.
"
At least once everyone who worked in Word used quotes, but not everyone knows that there are several types of them. By default, the text editor uses English "", but there are also German "" and French "". It is the latter type that is most often used in Russia, however, the program does not always print them by default. Is it possible in this case0337 put French quotation marks in Word ?
Change keyboard layout
The Russian layout uses herringbone quotes, while the English one uses double quotes. Thus, when writing some words, you will have to alternate layouts in order to maintain a single typographic style of the text.
If, after pressing Shift+2, the herringbone quotes do not appear, but some other character is printed instead, then the current layout is most likely different from the standard one. You can replace it by right-clicking on the icon on the dashboard and selecting properties.
Adjusting AutoCorrect options
Often problems with writing quotation marks are caused by changing Word settings. To return the original settings, go to the βSpell Checkβ tab and find the βAutoCorrect Optionsβ item there. It is necessary to allow replacing single quotes with double quotes in the "AutoCorrect as you type" item. If this does not help, then you will have to insert them manually.
Inserting characters
This is the only way how to put quotes in Word if the first two didn't help. You can simply copy the necessary characters from a suitable document, but this is not very convenient, since the text from the clipboard is lost, it is easier to use special codes. It is necessary to hold down the Alt key, and at this time type 0171 or 0187 on the keyboard for opening and closing quotes, respectively. This works only when using the Num Pad, the buttons from the top block of the keyboard do not fit.
You can also use the special characters menu, which is located in the "Symbols" sub-item of the "Insert" menu. If there are no quotes in the quick menu, then you need to click βAdditional charactersβ, and look for them in the category of punctuation marks. Doing this all the time is inconvenient, so it's best not to use this method to insert a large number of quotes, but if it is difficult to remember the codes, then they are quite suitable.
In Microsoft Word, double quotes entered from the keyboard in the Russian layout are automatically replaced with paired ones, the so-called Christmas trees (horizontal, if that). If necessary, it is quite easy to return the previous type of quotes (as drawn on the keyboard) - just undo the last action by pressing βCtrl + Zβ , or click the rounded undo arrow located at the top of the control panel next to the βSaveβ button .
The problem is that autocorrect will have to be canceled every time you put quotes in the text. Agree, by no means the most practical solution if you have to type a lot of text. It's even worse if you've copied text from somewhere on the Internet and pasted it into a MS Word text document. In this case, autocorrection will not be performed, and the quotation marks themselves throughout the text can also be different.
There are not always requirements for text documents regarding what quotes should be there, but they certainly should be the same. The simplest, and simply the right solution in this case, is to put the necessary quotes in the Word through the autocorrect function. Thus, you can freely replace double quotes with double quotes, as well as do the opposite.
Note: If you need to auto-replace with double quotes in a text where double quotes were originally set, you will have to spend a lot of time and effort, since opening and closing double quotes are the same.
If necessary, you can always cancel the automatic replacement of double quotes with double quotes in the MS Word settings. Read below for how to do this.
- If you have to put Christmas tree quotes in Word much more often than the so-called double quotes, the autocorrect parameters, which will be discussed below, will need to be accepted and saved only for the current document.

1. Open βSettingsβ programs (menu βFileβ in Word 2010 and higher or button βMS Wordβ in earlier versions).
2. In the window that appears in front of you, go to section βSpellingβ .
3. In section βAutoCorrect settingsβ click on the button of the same name.
4. In the dialog box that appears, go to tab βAutoFormat as you typeβ .
5. In section βReplace as you typeβ uncheck the box next to βstraight quotes in pairsβ , then press βOKβ .
6. Automatic replacement of straight quotes with double quotes will no longer occur.
We put any quotes using built-in characters
You can also put quotes in Word through the standard menu βSymbolβ . It has a fairly large set of special characters and characters that are not available on a computer keyboard, but are so necessary in some cases.
1. Go to tab βInsertβ and in the group βSymbolsβ click on the button of the same name.
2. In the menu that opens, select item βOther symbolsβ .
3. In the dialog box βSymbolβ , which will appear in front of you, find the quote character that you want to add to the text.
In order not to search for a quote character for a long time, in the menu of section βSetβ select item βspace change lettersβ .
located at the bottom of window βSymbolβ .
After adding an opening quote, don't forget to add a closing quote, of course, if they differ.
Add quotes using hex codes
In MS Word, each special character has its own serial number or, to put it correctly, a hexadecimal code. Knowing it, you can add the required character without going to menu βSymbolsβ , located in the βInsertβ tab .
Hold down the key βAltβ on the keyboard and enter one of the following number combinations, depending on which quotes you want to put in the text:
- 0171 and 0187 - herringbone quotes that open and close respectively;
- 0132 and 0147 - sticks that open and close;
- 0147 and 0148 - English double, opening and closing;
- 0145 and 0146 - English single, opening and closing.
Actually, we can finish here, because now you know how to put or change quotes in MS Word. We wish you success in further mastering the functions and capabilities of such a useful program for working with documents.
Setting quotes in the text, it would seem that it is difficult, I pressed the appropriate keys, that's all. In principle, this is so, but what to do if "paired" quotes are set when typing, but the necessary ones are usually ""straight""?
I think each of you knows that the compilation of any document has its own formatting rules, which also apply even to harmless quotes. It would seem that there is nothing terrible if there is a quote of the wrong type in the text, but no, very often there are situations when incorrectly formatted documents were sent for revision because of one unfortunate quote.
In the guide that you have just started to get acquainted with, I will try to show you in detail how to set up and change the desired type of quotes in Microsoft Word, and of course in other programs where you need to use them in the text.
What are the types of quotation marks?
As for the types of quotation marks, we can say that there are a lot of them, of different types and types. Here I will consider their most popular varieties, which are commonly used in our country.
- French quotation marks, usually called herringbone - have the following form "";
- Standard "straight" quotation marks;
- "English" quotation marks, is one of the most popular quotation marks when compiling various documents;
- "German" quotation marks, another variety that catches the eye more often than others;
- Also of English origin quotes but already in the form of βsingleβ quotes.
Rarely used, but still sometimes you can meet them too.
In general, almost every country has its own version of this sign, but since they are not distributed with us, I think the list can be completed here and go directly to how to change the type of quotation marks, for example, from "Christmas tree" to straight lines, or vice versa.
Setting the required type of quotes in Microsoft Word
So, now let's consider the situation when you need to put straight quotes instead of such "" quotes.
Open Microsoft Word and go to the item in the top menu, "" - "".
Now, on the right, select " Spelling " and on the left " autocorrect ".
In the AutoCorrect window, click on the tab " AutoFormat as you type" " and uncheck the box "Replacing straight quotes with double quotes".
As a result, we get the following, when entering, only "straight" quotes will now be set. But keep in mind that in documents that were created earlier, all quotes will remain in the same form as they were set earlier.
If, on the contrary, you need to make a Christmas tree instead of straight lines, then go through the same points and check the box back, while not forgetting to save the changes.
This is clear, now let's deal with the English variants of quotes. If you suddenly need one of these types, I recommend using a character insert.
In order to get there, go to the tab "Insert" - "Symbols" - "Other Symbols".
For example, we did this for the opening quote, respectively, we assign another combination to the closing quote in the same way, for example, βCtrl + 2β. after which we can put unusual quotes using the keys "Ctrl + 1 and 2".
How to change the type of quotes in Libreoffice
This kind of office software may not be as popular as Word, but everything here is easy to change the type of quotes.
Again, the default setting is to use double quotes instead of straight quotes.
But what needs to be done if we want to change everything the other way around.
Go to "Tools" - "AutoCorrect" - "AutoCorrect Options...".
In this window, go to the "National" tab, where just below there is a column of double quotes with the "Replace" item, which is ticked. By unchecking this box, you will turn off autocorrect quotes and get the desired result.
Accordingly, if on the contrary you want to get "double" quotes, check the box back and close the window saving the changed parameters.
If the document's formatting rules require English or German quotation marks, we should proceed as follows.
Again, go to the autocorrect settings in the same "National" tab.
Next, leaving the checkbox replaced, click on the βOpening quoteβ, a huge set of characters should appear, in which we find the appropriate one and select it, we do the same with the βClosing quoteβ, while choosing, of course, the corresponding closing character English or German. quotes.
Really easy? No need to bother with a bunch of keys, as it was in Microsoft Office.
Changing the type of quotes in non-office programs
Everything is clear with offices, but what if I need to change the type of quotes in another program that does not belong to the office suite but allows, for example, typing or something like that.
At one time, I myself faced such a problem. I found a program in which I typed blog articles, but the time came when I needed change the quote type. At first, I didn't see a problem with this. I just went into settings and checked the box that would allow me to change the quotes.
But, it wasnβt there, continuing typing, I noticed that nothing had changed, of course I started checking the settings, you never know, maybe I accidentally removed the mark back, but no, everything was in place. It turns out that the item in the settings responsible for this was, but it simply did not work. I found a way out of this situation in the layouts of Ilya Birman.
All you need to do is download it and install it on your computer, and then using the example where which character is located, set the desired type of quotes. True, you need to do all this with the help of the right Alt key.
In principle, all the explanations and you can download the layout directly on Ilya's page. In general, everything is very convenient and simple, I recommend it, and most importantly, it's all free.
OK, in principle, I stated everything that I wanted. I almost forgot, I have another good recommendation for you, be sure, hear be sure to join us at
for recording complex chemical compounds), literature (for recording transcription, inserting an author's text into a quotation), programming and others. This symbol is considered a pair, that is, it must be opened and then closed.
How to put square brackets on the keyboard.
Let's look at how to put brackets on the keyboard. On a regular keyboard, square brackets are placed on the buttons that correspond to the Russian letters " x " and " b ". In order to open a square bracket, you must go to the English layout and press the "x" key. Accordingly, to close the bracket, click on "b", also in English. This is the easiest way to make square brackets on the keyboard.
