Since the days are getting warmer, the outdoor projects have begun! I’ve wanted a tree swing since I was a kid, but unfortunately, my dad wasn’t the handy type. Luckily, since my hubby and I are the DIY king and queen (not really), we decided to make one for our kids so we can ensure its safety as a playground equipment safety. You can too with these affordable and easy DIY tree swing instructions.

Tools and materials needed:

  • Wood — I used a precut piece that measures 7-by-24 inches.

  • Rope — Synthetic lasts longer, but I chose to go with a natural fiber rope for more of an authentic look.

  • Paint

  • Stain or dark wax

  • Lighter — Use this for finishing any frayed edges of the rope.

  • Sandpaper

  • Drill with spade bit

Purchase or cut the wood to the size you want your swing seat to be.

Stain or wax your wood with a product of your choosing. I used Annie Sloan Dark Wax.

Next, paint your swing. Since, I’m going for an old-fashioned look, I chose to distress the swing for a true vintage feel. If you're not familiar with my blog, I LOVE vintage and chipped paint, so this is pretty typical for me to do. Just use some sandpaper to remove some paint, exposing the stain.

Photo courtesy of Deb Foglia/Seeking Lavender Lane

I made sure to really distress the center of the swing since that's where natural wear and tear would be from sitting and gliding.

Once the paint is dry, add the holes for where the rope will be pulled through. Be sure to measure evenly. I chose 3 inches from bottom and 2 inches from the side. Drill into the wood using a 1-inch spade bit.

Once, you have all four holes, it’s time to head outdoors. Pick that lucky branch and get started on the rope knot. I used a double running bowline knot to secure the rope to the branch.

Photo courtesy of Deb Foglia/Seeking Lavender Lane

I faced my fears, climbed the ladder, and tied my first ever Boy Scout knot. Woohoo, it was easy!

After tying your knot, weave the remainder of the rope through the holes in your swing by going down through one hole and back up through the other.

Photo courtesy of Deb Foglia/Seeking Lavender LanePhoto courtesy of Deb Foglia/Seeking Lavender Lane

OK, now is when it gets a bit tricky. If you know your knots this should be a breeze, but I had to watch a few YouTube videos and tutorials. I chose to do a knot just to the top of the swing for more security. Some of the tutorials I had watched skipped this part, but we want a secure swing, so safety first!

Photo courtesy of Deb Foglia/Seeking Lavender Lane

Once, you tie that basic knot, it’s time to do the trickier one. Start, by wrapping the end of rope around the rope above the swing four times going upward. Then swing the rope down and pull the end up through the center. Make sure it’s tight. After making sure the swing is level, repeat this process on the other side of the swing.

Now the only problem is that I have two kiddos and one swing. I may need to get to work again. Be sure to test out your swing before placing the little ones on it. Have fun with this DIY!

Changes

  • If you don't have a board, a shovel handle, log, or piece of plywood will work as a seat.

2. Swing made of disc and one rope

What you need

  • 4-5 boards 30-50 mm thick and 400-500 mm long;
  • thick rope;
  • hammer;
  • nails;
  • brush;
  • paint or varnish;
  • clamps;
  • glue;
  • drill;
  • wood drill;
  • tape measure;
  • thread;
  • pencil;
  • jigsaw;
  • grinder or sandpaper;

Mitch Deitrich YouTube channel

2. Sand the top of the platform manually with sandpaper or using a machine.

Mitch Deitrich YouTube Channel

3. Using a tape measure, find and mark the center of the area with a pencil. Also put a line at a distance of 10 mm from the edge of one of the sides.

YouTube channel Mitch Deitrich

4. Drive a nail into the center, tie a pencil to it with a thread and draw a circle with a radius along the mark at the edge of the site. Pull out the nail; you won't need it anymore.

Mitch Deitrich YouTube channel

5. Saw out the circle with a jigsaw and trim the sharp edges with a file or sandpaper.

YouTube channel Mitch Deitrich

6. Using a drill, make a hole in the center with a diameter of 2-3 mm larger than the thickness of the rope of the future swing.

Mitch Deitrich YouTube channel

7. Use a file to grind off the resulting sharp edges in the center so that the rope does not fray when swinging.

Mitch Deitrich YouTube channel

8. Paint or varnish the resulting seat and wait until it dries.

Mitch Deitrich YouTube channel

9. Thread the rope through the hole and tie a couple of knots to keep it from falling through.

Mitch Deitrich YouTube Channel

10. Attach the free end of the rope to the tree.

Mitch Deitrich YouTube channel

What can be changed

  • The round seat can be easily replaced with a fairly strong rectangular board. It won't make the ride any worse.
  • To avoid the hassle of splicing the boards, you can use a suitable piece of plywood.

3. Swing from an old tire

What you need

  • Tire;
  • bicycle inner tube;
  • rope;
  • electrical tape;
  • steel washers according to the diameter of the rope;
  • clamps;
  • drill;
  • drill;
  • knife;
  • thin cord or line.

How to

1. Estimate the approximate length of the rope from the branch to the ground, and add 1 m in reserve.

Rewind in place with duct tape to keep the edges from fraying, and cut off the piece with a sharp knife.

Chris Notap YouTube Channel

2. Cut the bike tube and put it on one end of the rope.

Chris Notap YouTube Channel

3. Tie off this piece to form a loop wrapped around the camera. This will protect the rope from chafing and prevent it from cutting into the branch.

Chris Notap YouTube Channel

4. Throw the rope over the branch and tighten the loop. For convenience, you can use a thin cord with a weight attached to it.

Chris Notap YouTube Channel

5. Form a knot at a height of about 1.5-1.7 m from the ground.

Chris Notap YouTube channel

6. Cut two more pieces of rope about 2 m long each. Thread them into a knot on the hanger, and then tie one knot at each end to secure.

Chris Notap YouTube Channel

7. Tie a knot on the main rope from the branch. You should have three ends to hold the tire on.

YouTube channel Chris Notap

8. Divide the tire into three approximately equal parts and drill holes d along the thickness of the rope, stepping back from the edge of the tire. On its back, make a few more holes for rainwater to drain.

Chris Notap YouTube Channel

9. Insert the ropes into the holes, put on the washers, and fix the ends with clamps.

Chris Notap YouTube channel

10. Release the tire and try to rock.

Chris Notap YouTube channel

What can be changed

  • Instead of clips, you can simply tie knots that will not allow the rope to fall into the washers and will securely hold the entire structure.
  • If desired, the tire can be easily painted so that it looks more aesthetically pleasing and does not stain clothes.

4. Plank swing

What you need

  • Piece of furniture board;
  • elbow;
  • pencil;
  • rope;
  • drill;
  • drill;
  • file;
  • sandpaper or planer;

YouTube channel “Mikhail Le Dantu”

9. Attach the ends of the ropes to any strong support, such as a wall bar.

YouTube channel "Mikhail Le Dantu"

What can be changed

  • If the furniture panel is replaced with a cutting board, then all that remains is to drill holes and fix the ropes.
  • The swing can be hung in a doorway, on a tree, on a terrace or pergola beam.

5. Swing made of polypropylene pipes and plywood

What you need

  • Polypropylene pipe;
  • rope;
  • plywood;
  • carabiners;
  • hacksaw;
  • pipe cutter;
  • drill;
  • drill;
  • paint;
  • brush.

How to make

1. Cut a 30 x 30 cm or 30 x 40 cm seat out of plywood. Drill holes in the corners to attach a rope. Paint the plywood if desired.

Cut the polypropylene pipe into pieces: 15 cm four pieces, 25 cm two pieces, 35 cm two pieces. Drill through holes in each piece along both edges.

Divide the rope into two equal pieces. Then fold each in half, thread and secure in carabiners. These will be the left and right suspensions.

YouTube channel “Marcel Yarmakov”

2. Take the longest piece of pipe and thread one rope of the right and left hangers through the holes on each side.

YouTube channel “Marcel Yarmakov”

3. Next, string the middle piece of pipe one at a time, also inserting the rope through the holes at the ends of the parts.

YouTube channel "Marcel Yarmakov"

4. Next - one short piece at a time. Here, the rope is already inserted into the pipe itself, along the entire length.

Marcel Yarmakov YouTube channel

5. Now thread the free ends of the left and right hangers through the holes of the second long piece.

YouTube channel “Marcel Yarmakov”

6. Insert the rope into the remaining free holes in the tubes of medium length. And then add one short piece at a time, again passing the rope through the pipe along its entire length.

Pass the free ends of the hangers through the holes in the seat and tie a knot in each.

Marcel Yarmakov YouTube channel

7. Attach the carabiners to any solid support. The swing is ready!

YouTube channel "Marcel Yarmakov"

What can be changed

  • The seat is also easy to make from a cutting board or piece of wood of a suitable size.
  • Instead of pipes, wooden blocks or cuttings from garden tools will do. True, you have to tinker with drilling holes for the rope.

It is good if a cozy resting place for the whole family is arranged on the garden plot. Even in a small area, you can place a gazebo, a canopy, several small benches. Do not interfere on the site and garden swings.

They can be made for both children and adults. Building a wooden swing with your own hands is quite simple. To do this, you need to follow the instructions.

Details of the construction of a garden swing

When creating a wooden swing for the garden, you will need to decide on the main material. It can be metal, wood or plastic. They are most often used in the construction of swings with and without backs. When creating such a design with your own hands, it is best to pay attention to wood.

Such a swing will undoubtedly have its drawbacks. However, they are relevant to all outdoor wood products. With proper processing and installation of the structure, it will serve for many years. Such a swing will not suffer from the effects of negative environmental factors.

The most unfavorable of them are:

  • snow;
  • rain;
  • mold and fungus;
  • rot;
  • sun rays;
  • temperature fluctuations.

You can quickly build a swing in the garden with your own hands.

Tip! To prevent premature deterioration of wood, it is worth using special tools to protect wooden elements. You can also put an awning over the swing.

Advantages of making your own swing

Wood has many positive properties that ensure its successful use in different conditions. This allows you to make a wooden swing for giving not only comfortable and beautiful.

Wood constructions have the following features:

  • Eco-friendliness. Wood is a natural material that is completely safe for humans and animals.
  • External attractiveness. The swing, made of wooden elements, can fit perfectly into any landscape. This is because in the garden, most of the surroundings are natural materials. Compared to metal products, wooden swings look much more harmonious in the garden near a country house.
  • High security. Wood has softness and flexibility, which helps to avoid many injuries during the operation of the swing. This advantage is especially true if the design is intended for children.
  • Easy to install. Almost everyone can build a swing on their own. The main thing is to get acquainted with the construction technology of the structure.
  • Versatility. Such material is excellent for processing. It can be cut, sanded and turned. Swings are made both single and in the form of spacious sofas. For work on the design and construction of the swing, you will not need to involve specialists.

Attention! With the independent manufacture of wooden swings, you do not need to spend money on the work of specialists. Also, the material for the construction has a fairly low price.

Sizes and models of swings

When constructing wooden swings on your own, you should take care not only of finding materials for construction, but also of creating a project. You will also need to determine the location of the swing. To speed up work, use photos of finished products. You can also use existing drawings.

Wooden swings are available in many designs. Each of them should be considered in more detail:

  • Family. The main distinguishing feature of such structures is their large capacity. The basis of the design is a bench of great length. It usually fits up to 4-5 people at once. Most often, such products have a canopy that can protect from rain and sun.
  • Children's swing. Such products can be made in various modifications. Often, structures have supports, a seat and fasteners. When building them, it is important to think about creating maximum safety conditions for the child. For this, a comfortable backrest, partitions and belts are constructed, with which the child is fixed.
  • Portable. Such structures are small in size and light in weight. Such characteristics allow not only to quickly dismantle and move the swing within the site, but also transport them by car to other places. Such swings are mounted on tree branches, on quickly installed supports.

The photo of the wooden swing from above confirms that the portable structures look quite attractive. When choosing the type of swing that you plan to install on your site, you should pay attention to the features of the backyard area.

Site selection

Any construction planned on a summer cottage must first be designed. Also, before work, the optimal place for construction is selected.

Attention! All principles that are used when choosing a place for a swing apply to both family and children's swings.

It is best if the area where the swing is to be installed is level. You should also choose a place where shade will remain during sunny days. You can install a swing under a spreading tree or place them directly on the porch, where a canopy will save you from bad weather.

Such factors directly affect the comfort of people resting on the swing. For example, it is rather unpleasant to sit on a seat that is too hot. If the structure is outdoors, the wooden elements may deteriorate from constant exposure to precipitation.

It is also necessary to choose a place where there is enough space for swinging. It must be taken into account that during the day the shadow will move depending on the position of the sun in the sky. It is better to place the swing where the shadow is by noon. This is the time when the heat is at its strongest.

Drawing of a wooden swing

Building a swing with your own hands from wood is quite simple. To do this, you need to perform an accurate drawing. Simple hanging structures that are mounted on an A-shaped support will fit perfectly into both a large plot and a small garden. Their construction does not require much effort and time. It is necessary to prepare the following tools:

  • hacksaw;
  • pins;
  • circular saw;
  • square;
  • tape measure;
  • jigsaw.

You will also need a planer and a hammer, a chisel, sawhorses, a screwdriver, and an electric drill to make the swing.

Attention! The purchase of ready-made swings, of course, is a faster and easier option. However, in order for the design to fully meet the needs of the site owner, it is worth drawing up an individual project and doing all the work yourself.

Phased construction

You can create a swing for a summer house with your own hands quite quickly. In order to avoid problems during the direct performance of work, it is worth drawing up a drawing in advance. It will reflect all building materials with indication of dimensions. Based on a detailed diagram, you can easily understand which building elements you need to buy.

For example, you will need bars for the uprights, boards for the back, seat and armrests. You should also stock up on fasteners. It is better if pine impregnated with special compounds is chosen to create the structure.

Tip! In advance, you should prepare an antiseptic with which the wood will be treated. In addition, you need to choose materials for finishing wooden swings.

Such subtleties in the construction of a structure must be taken into account even at the planning stage.

In addition to fasteners, you will need to prepare spacers, a chain (2 cm thick), hooks, sandpaper.

Do-it-yourself family swing

The best place to install the structure is the backyard. In most cases, it is equipped specifically for recreation. Here the swing will look cozy and harmonious.

An oblique cut is marked on the end of each supporting leg for the swing. Such work is carried out using a square. The result should be a bevel along which the cut will be made.

Before sawing wooden structural elements, they must first be secured to the trestles. Sawing should be according to the markup. Do not forget about controlling the parties. Sometimes you need to process an already made bevel. To do this, use a planer.

To make the second leg identical, attach the first butt joint to it. Each mark is transferred to the second leg. Then they are cut through. After that, each leg is laid on the edge in such a way that there is 1.2 m between their lower parts. The upper ends of the legs are adjacent to the transverse beam.

Half a meter is marked from the bottom of the supporting legs and a lower bar is applied to fasten the legs of one side of the swing. The top brace must be 15 cm below the crossbeam.

As soon as the supporting legs of each side are fastened together, the crossbeam must be mounted. The seat is created on the basis of the L-shaped frame. In this case, the boards must have a thickness of 50 mm.

Attention! If you want to build a children's swing, you just need to shorten the seat.

To hang the swing on both sides of the structure, it is worth installing screws to which the rings will be fixed. Such elements must be used to connect the swing and support using suspensions. Usually chains are used for wooden structures.

The connection of the main parts is carried out with carabiners.
