Candy and Chocolate topiaries are a simple, but beautiful gift idea if you’re looking for unique ways to gift sweets.

While perfect for a variety of occasions, this idea is especially ideal for the holidays.

After all, there’s plenty of festive flair to this easy DIY project, which comes studded with colorful, shiny candies, and a big beautiful bow to wrap it all up.

The best part? This DIY Candy Topiary can be customized with whatever candies you want, and it’s a pretty affordable project too!

In this Chocolate Topiary tutorial, we’ll be showing you step by step how to make this ultra easy gift, which we’re sure will delight all the sweet tooths on your list this year.

We hope you find it helpful!

Pin for later:

Materials for Your Chocolate Topiary

For this sweet and easy DIY gift, all you need is:

  • 1 styrofoam ball
  • 1 styrofoam or floral foam block
  • 1 flower pot (ideally larger than the ball)
  • 1 wooden dowel
  • Double sided tape (or hot glue)*
  • Individually wrapped chocolates/candies of your choice (we used a mix of Lindt chocolate balls, Werther’s Originals and Kisses)
  • Pebbles/rocks (to weigh down your flower pot and make it stable)
  • Thick ribbon or bow (for decoration)

The exact amount of candy you will need depends of course on the size of styrofoam ball and pot that you end up choosing.

For ours, we used a 5″ styrofoam ball and ended up using 2 boxes of Lindor Chocolate Truffles, 2 bags of Werther’s Original, and 2 small bags each of regular Holiday Kisses, Cookies and Creme Kisses, and Peppermint Kisses. (This bulk box might be a good choice).

Annoyingly, if the ball was a bit smaller, we could have gotten away with only one box/bag of each, but we did need the little bit extra to fill in gaps.

Ultimately, we did have quite a bit of candy left over, but we put it to good use!

Overall, we would say this project uses up a surprising amount of candy, so better to buy more and have extra than too little. Just like us, we’re sure you’ll find uses for the leftovers!

It’s also important that you find a flower pot that’s larger than your styrofoam ball. We had limited choices at our Dollar Store, so we ended up with a pot around the same size as our ball, which caused some balance/stability issues, so getting a larger pot is ideal.

*NOTE: We decided to use this strong double sided tape for our chocolate topiary because it’s much easier to get the candies off for consumption.

This should be fine if you’re not transporting the topiary very far, but if you plan to transport it or want to ensure that the candies are stuck on very well, then we would recommend using hot glue instead.

The tradeoff is the candies will be harder to rip off, but the end result will be a lot more secure.

How to Make a Candy and Chocolate Topiary: Step by Step

Have all your materials gathered? Now let’s get to work…

Step One: Insert Your Wooden Dowel

To start, we’re going to get the dowel into our sytrofoam ball.

IMPORTANT: If you are using the double stick tape method for this project, then keep the plastic packaging ON the sytrofoam ball. Tape sticks onto plastic far better than onto styrofoam, so make sure you don’t remove the plastic wrap around the ball.

Using some scissors, cut a small hole in the packaging that corresponds roughly to the width of your wooden dowel. This will be the entry point for the dowel.

Before you press the dowel into your styrofoam ball, you might need to use a pen or some scissors to puncture a small hole into the ball first before getting that dowel in there.

When inserting the dowel, make sure you stop about halfway through the ball, taking care not to press it through all the way to the other end. Your finished product should look like this:

Step Two: Cover your base with tape

If you are planning to use the hot glue method, then you can skip this step.

BUT if you are planning on using double sided tape, then this is a super fun step! Simply wrap double sided tape around the entire sphere, making sure you cover the whole thing and leave no gaps.

It ends up looking like a cute oversized lollipop:

Step Three: Add Your Candies and Chocolates

Now this is the part where you get creative. If you’re using the double sided tape method, all you need to do is place your candies where you want and press them down firmly (taking care not to squash your chocolates).

If you are using hot glue, then simply add a small dab of hot glue onto your candy and press it onto wherever you want on the sphere. It’s important that you don’t add too much glue because doing so will make it really difficult to remove the candies for consumption later.

You can add candies to your topiary in whatever pattern you want, but we decided to go for rows of each chocolate to give the topiary a more uniform look.

We started with a row of Lindt chocolate truffles:

Then moved onto a row of Werther’s, and then green holiday Kisses:

Keep adding candies, pressing down as you go to ensure they stick on well. Depending on the quality of your double sided tape, you might notice candies starting to fall off. If this is the case, you might be better off trying hot glue or perhaps even Sticky Tac.

We used this double sided tape though and everything stayed on fine.

If you keep repeating this process with more rows and candy, eventually it will start to look like this:

And don’t forget to do the bottom! Feel free to invert the dowel/ball like so to make adding your final candies/chocolates easier:

In the end, you should have something that looks like this:

Step Four: Set Up Your Base

Get that pot, rocks, pebbles, and foam ready! Because your candy-studded ball is likely quite heavy, it’s important to create a stable base so your creation doesn’t randomly fall over.

To do this, we need to A) make sure the pot is large enough to create some stability and B) make sure the pot is heavy enough to balance out the weight.

So for that, we used rocks!

Originally, we put styrofoam in the pot and added some rocks around this bit of foam for stabilization.

While this worked fine, we think it would have been even sturdier if we added a base layer of rocks in the pot before adding the foam, so feel free to try that for additional stability.

So, insert your styrofoam/floral foam, then insert your dowel, taking care to ensure that it is straight.

If your creation is feeling wobbly, don’t worry! That’s what the rocks are for. Start adding your rocks and you should feel it all begin to stabilize.

Again, try your best to find a pot that’s larger than your styrofoam ball. While the rocks helped stabilize our creation, the fact that the pot was on the smaller side meant it was always a bit wobbly.

Once you’ve added all your rocks/pebbles, top off your base with leftover candies to make it pretty.

And it should look like this:

Step Five: Add Your Finishing Touches

By now, your Christmas Chocolate Topiary should be pretty much done, but what really brings this DIY gift alive is the finishing touches!

We added a red ribbon to the dowel and tied it into a pretty bow, and stuck on a cute punny note.

And voilà – all done! Step back and admire your gorgeous creation.

How To Make a Candy Topiary Centerpiece

STEP 1: The first step is to take your terra-cotta clay pot and paint it white. While the paint is still wet sprinkle on your crystal glitter.

STEP 2: To ensure your terra-cotta pot is stable, add rocks to it. Once all your rocks have been added, attach a foam disc on top, using hot glue to secure it.

STEP 3: Next paint your wooden dowel white and allow it to dry. Once it is dry add hot glue to the bottom tip of your wooden dowel. Insert your wooden dowel into the center of your foam disc.

STEP 4: Apply hot glue to the space between the terra-cotta pot rim and the foam disc. Then add your green sand to the space.

STEP 5: Now cover your foam disc with mod podge and add your green sand to it. Next place your 3 inch or 4 inch foam ball to your wooden dowel.

Add your Candy to the Foam Balls

STEP 6: Repeat the same steps above to a 1 and 1/2 inch Terra-Cotta Pot, adding a 2 inch foam ball. Then cut your tooth pics in half and use them to attach your spice drops to the foam ball attached to your 1 and 1/2 inch Terra-Cotta Pot.

STEP 7:  Add your gumdrops to your other terra-cotta pot with the 3 or 4 inch foam ball using hot glue. Start at the center of your foam ball.

STEP 8: Lastly, spray both your gumdrops and your spice candy with acrylic spray. This gives it a glossy finish and protects your candy from the harsh heat of lighting at your event.

STEP 9: Set the table

What is Topiary: getting to know the tree of happiness

Topiary is a decorated tree with a crown of confectionery or other decor. Initially, the word topiary referred to the art of gardening. The tree, which, with the light hand of the gardener, took any shape, for example, a ball or a triangle, became a symbol of beauty and happiness. Over time, gardeners became more and more skilled craftsmen, and landscape design reached a new level.

According to many people, such a tree can bring happiness

Nowadays, tree gardens in the shape of any animal and geometric shapes can be seen all over the world.

The fashion for unusual trees has spread to the confectionery industry, so sweet topiary appeared: from chupa-chups, marmalade and sweets. You can make a beautiful decorative tree with improvised means, for example, coffee beans, lollipops, Raffaello, lollipops. Topiary is called a tree of happiness or a bouquet of happiness. Many people believe that such a gift adds good luck and intelligence to its owner, so they put coins in the base, and attach a bill to the crown. Making a magical bouquet of sweets is very simple, you don't need anything special to please your loved ones with a beautiful gift.

How to make a do-it-yourself candy topiary: master class

In any creative endeavor, you first need to catch inspiration. To do this, you can look through photos of topiary, watch a master class, find out what has already been created in this area.

You should choose sweets with as bright a wrapper as possible: then your product will look more unusual and brighter.

  • Robust foot of the same diameter;
  • Pot, tub or candy jar in the base.
  • The base must be heavy enough so that the topiary does not tip over. Looking at the photo, you might think that a bouquet of sweets was created by some kind of magician. But in fact, all these masterpieces of sweets, ribbons and decorations were made by ordinary people. A master class with clear instructions will help you make candy topiary with your own hands, even better than in the photo.

    What must be included in the composition :

    1. Styrofoam or papier-mâché ball as the base for the crown;
    2. Wooden stick, spoon or rod for stem;
    3. Any container that will serve as a pot for the tree of happiness.

    Go beyond sweets and decorate your topiary with ribbons or beads

    Optional tree decorations :

    • For crown ; sweets, a lot of lollipops, Raffaello, Marshmallow marshmallows, round lollipops, ribbons, bows, banknotes, rhinestones, sparkles, artificial and fresh flowers, the variety is limited only by the author's imagination;
    • For stem - ribbons, sequins, bows, glitter coating, rhinestones;
    • To fill pot - live moss, pebbles, coins, sweets, large beads.

    A bouquet of sweets is made in a huge variety of options, in the photo you can see how unique and unrepeatable all models are. A master class will help you realize your own original idea.

    How to make a candy topiary: instructions step by step

    Before starting work, you need to prepare glue that will serve to firmly fix the parts of the topiary, as well as mounting foam or plaster. How to make a durable and beautiful candy bouquet?

    Step-by-step guide :

    • Pierce the base ball halfway with the foot;
    • Poke glue into the hole;
    • Place the foot in the ball, allow the glue to dry;
    • Fill pot with mounting foam or plaster;
    • Place the stem firmly into the pot, let dry;
    • Decorate the crown, decorate the pot - the topiary is ready.

    The most optimal solution is to fix the sweets on a toothpick so that you can then remove them

    How to decorate the crown with your own hands? It all depends on whether you need to eat sweets. If yes, then you can simply fix them with toothpicks with rhinestones, or stick them on a light glue, such as PVA. If the candies are not going to be removed, and they will only serve as decoration, you can use a stronger glue or plaster. In order for the bouquet to look beautiful, even when some of the sweets are removed from it, the base ball should be of a pleasant color, in harmony with the rest of the composition.

    The most neutral and popular option is the cork ball. Does not require painting, looks great on any topiary.

    Topiary base can last for a long time: it is therefore important to make it as durable as possible. The basis for the topiary (ball, leg, pot) can be the same, but the decorations change depending on the holiday.

    Marmalade or lollipop topiary

    Master class on how to make a decoration for a children's party, matinee or birthday.

    Do-it-yourself topiary from marmalade or chupa-chups is made elementary :

    • Chupa-chups stick in continuous rows into the base-ball, decorate the pot;
    • Marmalade fasten on long wooden skewers with a transparent polyethylene film, stick into the base-ball.

    Chupa Chups Topiary is both a beautiful and tasty gift for any child. For children, it is important that the pot is very stable, because children will pull sweets from the ball in different directions. Therefore, it is best to fix the trunk of a tree in a pot with the help of gypsum. The base ball is sold at any art store, and if it is not possible to buy it, you can roll the paper tightly, glue it together with PVA glue and use such a blank.

    The easiest way to decorate a pot with your own hands :

    1. Paint a nice color;
    2. Write in holiday symbols, eg Happy Birthday, Happy Holidays;
    3. Drape with fabric;
    4. Decorate with a bow ribbon;
    5. Wrap in gift paper;
    6. Cover with coffee beans, shells, rhinestones, buttons or other objects according to the author's intention.

    The master class reveals the main secrets of making topiary, but true creativity is always its own way in creating beauty. With your own hands, you can implement the ideas that are shown in the photo or realize your own plan.

    Sweet topiary: a bouquet of sweets for every holiday

    Holidays have traditional symbols. New Year is a Christmas tree with toys, Valentine's Day is hearts, March 8 is flowers and ribbons. Topiary can be easily adapted to any date.

    In order to adapt the topiary for the upcoming holiday, it is enough to apply the necessary decorations on the old base.

    The crown can be decorated with artificial flowers and sweets, Christmas balls, colored bows and ribbons.

    Eatable sweets are fixed with skewers just like marmalade. Sweets that are not planned to be removed can be glued firmly directly onto the ball. To decorate with flowers, you need to cut the flowers to the same length and stick the flower stem into the ball base.

    Topiary is believed to bring happiness and symbolize good luck and wealth. To make this sign really come true, you can hide a bill or coins in a pot.

    3 creative candy tree ideas with step by step photos

    It will take a lot of time and experience to learn how to make complex interior details, gifts with your own hands. But there are crafts that literally everyone can do. A good example is topiary. They are fantasy trees; designers use a variety of materials for its crown.

    Sweets in gold, silver or bright multi-colored wrappers are well suited for such purposes.

    The tree will become a decoration of the space, it can be presented for a holiday or just to please a person.

    Sweet tooth will especially like this gift. Trees have become fashionable additions to the interior, and there are quite a few options for decorating them.

    In this publication we list some of them. There are also master classes, where the manufacturing process is described step by step.

    Materials and tools

    Below are the main materials, tools that will be needed for the job. But for each method, different additional items can be used.

    • Pot. The main thing is that its size is medium or large.

    It should also be heavy enough.

    The weight and parameters of the pot are determined by the size of the craft itself.

    Chocolates and lollipops can differ in their density, and therefore, to begin with, it is worth choosing what to make crafts from, and then choosing a container.

    Ideal for a clay pot.

    • Crown material.

    Designers are advised to pre-select the shape of the crown of the tree. And then - to create it from improvised material. For example, a newspaper is suitable for this, it will need to be compressed and secured with duct tape.

    Plastic or rubber balls are also suitable.

    Some cut out a styrofoam ball or other geometric shape.

    • Barrel. For manufacturing, you need a long trunk made of durable, smooth wood.

    A branch that can support the top is fine.

    Miniature compositions are made from simple pencils.

    You can buy a special blank in a store that sells everything for needlework.

    In addition, for the manufacture you need an adhesive composition, polyurethane foam (the pot is filled with it), glass pebbles, various details that imitate the earth (fabric, etc.), a satin ribbon for decorating the barrel, sweets packed in beautiful candy wrappers.

    Chupa Chups

    In addition to the listed items, you will need:

    • wooden spoon;
    • corrugated sheets;
    • superglue;
    • Chupa Chups lollipops;
    • utility knife;
    • plaster;
    • beads;
    • chocolates.

    First make the frame of the topiary. To do this, the actions are performed in the following sequence:

    • Take a foam ball, pierce it with the tip of a wooden spoon. To make the design more reliable, glue is applied at the junction of the two parts.
    • The pot is then wrapped with sheets of corrugated paper. Next, water and gypsum are mixed in containers, the dried glued blank is inserted into the mass. The craft must be held with your hands for about 5 minutes, otherwise the trunk will roll. During this time, the solution should become thicker.
    • When the gypsum composition dries, glue is applied to the surface, beads are laid out. After the adhesive mass has dried, work on the manufacture of the base will be completed. On this basis, a topiary is made.
    • Now you can proceed to the design of the crown. First, cut off about half a stick of each Chupa Chups candy with a clerical knife. Next, they begin to insert sweets into the foam crown.
    • After completing the design of the upper part, the barrel is wrapped with a satin ribbon, and chocolates are placed on top of the beads.

    From "Raffaello"

    Such a topiary can be presented for a wedding, anniversary, Valentine's Day or March 8th.

    Long skewers are needed to make a bouquet of Raffaello. They are stuck into a foam ball (it should have a top-step that protrudes a little). Some designers cut out a figure with several steps from the foam circle so that the bouquet is more magnificent. Also, a cardboard tube is useful for work, it is put on skewers, and a comfortable handle is obtained.

    Work order:

    • All sweets are individually wrapped in sheets of corrugated paper, golden foil. They are attached to a wire, which is decorated with green tissue paper, so that the lower part looks more like stems.
    • To decorate such a topiary, satin ribbons of delicate shades, lace, openwork stripes, and a printed wrapper for flowers are suitable. You can find a shallow cardboard box and arrange it inside with a cloth, fix the cut on a foam base. They also lay out a garland of small flowers, add a small souvenir, for example, a case with jewelry.
    • A beautiful cup can serve as a unique bouquet of Raffaello sweets. For better stability, a piece of foam is placed in it. At the same time, the length of the handle is calculated so that the bouquet in the vase is stable.

    From sweets

    The shape, color and size of chocolates do not play a special role. In this case, sweets can be without wrappers. First you need to prepare an adhesive composition that will securely fix all the details of the topiary, and a gypsum mortar.

    Step by step:

    • The base in the form of a ball for a tree is made in the same way as in the previous version, only the base should be stronger if chocolates or truffles weigh more than Raffaello.
