Christmas Tree Basics

You found it. After standing up and spinning around dozens of trees, you finally found the perfect Christmas tree. Now that you’ve got it home and unloaded it from the roof of the car, there are a few important things to do that will help get it in the house and make it easier to care for throughout the month.

First, measure the height of the tree before you bring it into the house. That helps ensure that it fits until the ceiling with enough room for decorations. If it’s too tall, you can shorten the trunk outside or in the garage where you don’t have to worry about a pile of sawdust all over the rug. Even if you don’t need to shorten it, it’s a good idea to cut an inch or so off the bottom of the trunk, or have that done where you buy it. Fresh wood will absorb more water, helping keep the tree fresher longer.

Next, test fit your Christmas tree with the stand. You may need a bigger stand if the tree trunk is too big. Or, you can whittle it down to fit with these whittling tips. Now’s the time to trim the lower branches too. That way there’s plenty of room between the floor and the lower reaches of the tree. Remember to use a lopper to trim branches.

Leave the net on it until you’ve got in the stand and set up in the house.

Tighten Bolts the Easy Way

Tightening the bolts on most stands is a pain, literally, and it takes forever. To save time and your hands, get a little help from your electric drill. Start by using a hacksaw to cut off the little ‘L’ at the end of the tree stand bolts. Chuck the ends of the bolts into your drill and tighten them. You’ll have your tree locked down in minutes. If one of the bolts breaks or gets stuck, don’t stress it; you can fix them easily.

Secure the Tree

If you’re concerned about your Christmas tree standing firmly on your carpet, put the stand on a piece of 1/4-in. hardboard. You can get 4 x 8-ft. sheets, or smaller, at any home center. If you really want to lock it down, use 1/4-in. pan head machine screws to mount the tree stand to the wood. If you have wood or tile floors, just put some duct tape over the screwheads so they don’t scratch the floor.

4 / 9

Knee-Saving Watering Technique

You have to keep the tree watered, so it doesn’t dry out and leave brown needles all over the floor and to keep the tree from becoming a fire hazard. But squeezing under a tree with a watering can is a little difficult, so to make watering it easier, hang a funnel with a plastic tube attached to the end of it from a tree branch. Then, run the tube along the trunk and into the water reservoir. Have someone keep an eye on the water reservoir to prevent overfilling.

5 / 9

No-Spill Christmas Tree

Water leaking from the reservoir at the bottom of the tree stand can cause serious damage to your floors. One easy way to prevent that is by using a plastic snow saucer, the kind with the flat area in the center, underneath the tree stand. If you have wood floors, use a carpet remnant or an extra bath mat to put under the saucer to prevent scratches. If you’re really worried about leaks, you can also use technology to detect water leaks.

6 / 9

Buy a Tree Bag When You Get Your Tree

Slip a tree disposal bag over the base of the tree before putting it in the stand. Don’t forge to tear a slit for the trunk so the tree can get water. The bag is hidden under the tree skirt until you’re ready to haul the tree out the door—without leaving a trail of needles through the house. Just remove the ornaments from the tree, pull the bag up and you’re on your way.

Fire Safety

Keep your Christmas tree fire-safe by keeping it watered. Buy it fresh, pull light plugs overnight, and keep it well away from candles and fireplaces. Click for more fire prevention tips.

Hook for Tall Trees

Putting up and taking down holiday lights in a tall outdoor tree can be tricky. The easiest method we've found is to use a paint roller extension pole with a hook on the end. You can use a wire coat hanger or other heavy-gauge wire. Just embed it in the pole threads, bend the wire up into a hook and secure it with duct tape to keep the hook from sliding around the pole.

Soft Artificial Tree Binding

When dismantling our artificial Christmas tree, we always used the ribbons it was originally packed with to tie up the boughs of each section. Last year, the ribbons finally wore out and we couldn't find a strong enough replacement. Instead, we came up with a terrific substitute—self-adhesive 'bandage' wrap. The wrap is strong and reusable, it won't damage the tree and it's not very expensive.

Stand for hot hands made of wood. Coasters for hot wooden discs. What is their advantage over other materials

Such weather outside the window, it is impossible to stay at home! Pick up a thermos with your favorite herbal tea, a camera and children - and go to the park, there are so many amazing and wonderful things that the time spent on a walk will be equal to five lessons at school, three books read and a long conversation with a mentor. Look around, breathe in, admire - this day is unique, and you will definitely get something from it that you will not find in any other day. Birds sing about tenderness, irises proudly raise their heads above the flower beds, freshly cut grass on the lawns drives you crazy with the smell of freshness - a fairy tale! There is a special mood in the parks now: there is no suffocating summer heat yet, but it is already full of greenery and colors, and it is impossible not to rejoice at this. Take a closer look, you will surely find something that will resonate in your soul only with understandable notes - perhaps these are touching pansies, trustingly basking in the sun, maybe these are neatly whitewashed park borders, pleasing with smooth lines, or, who knows, speech Are we talking about saw cuts of dried trees folded in neat piles, which are carefully cleaned by public utilities in the spring? Here it is, the happiness of any creative person! Grab wealth, bring it home - today we will do it!

Wooden hot plate - 5 DIY ideas:

1. Simple wooden hot plate

Sometimes beauty is not the result of drawing, decoupage, knitting and other techniques. It happens that it is enough just to process the source material, emphasizing its natural properties, in order to get the perfect thing. Try to properly clean and sand the wooden saw cut, take a closer look - maybe this is already enough for your hot stand to please with lines and color?

2. Wooden hot plate with lace

And what if we combine what, it would seem, at first glance, is absolutely opposite in essence? Delicate, weightless, light lace and brutal, real, solid wood? Together we can do something very interesting!

3. Watermelon shaped wooden hot plate

Ah, how I long for summer and berries! Maybe you should sublimate your dream into creativity? A hot stand in the form of a delicious juicy watermelon is just what you need to cheer yourself up and gain strength and wait for the fruit and berry season. The technique of work is simple - even if you do not have special skills in working with paints, you can handle it, it's not difficult. The main thing is to sand the saw cut of the tree well.

4. Hot plate made of wood with a pattern through the stencil

However, if you have a great desire to decorate wooden saw cuts with a pattern, but do not have visual talent, try using stencils - ready-made or made by yourself. This simple solution will help you make stylish coasters that are original and unique. The ones that you personally find the most interesting.

We hope you enjoy our publications about making wooden jewelry and other products with your own hands, we try to choose the most interesting topics that you could bring to life on your own.

Before the weekend, we managed to write four publications, each of which we recommend that you familiarize yourself with -, and or, be sure to read, these are very interesting master classes!

What do we need to make a do-it-yourself hot cut stand?

We actually only need four things:

  • Juniper branches (log cabins) with a thickness of about three to six centimeters, this will be quite enough. Of course, you can always use other types of wood - plum, apple, ash, oak. The main thing is to have a beautiful drawing that will delight your eyes.
  • Miter saw (in our case 🙂), at home you can use a regular hacksaw
  • Adhesive, preferably for wood bonding
  • Sandpaper

How to make a hot plate with your own hands step by step

  • After we have picked up branches (or log cabins), we begin to process them. If the bark peels off very easily and breaks off almost by itself, then we remove it, but if it holds well, then it’s even better, it will be more beautiful.

We cut into small saw cuts with a miter saw (about four to five millimeters thick), if it is not available, then, as mentioned above, we use a hacksaw.

  • After we have cut the required number of juniper saw cuts (usually 15-17 saw cuts of different diameters are required per stand), we need to sand them a little. It should be noted that the fewer cuts you have, the easier it will be to assemble it, but at the same time it will not look so impressive. It should be noted that the fewer cuts you have, the easier it will be to assemble it, but at the same time it will not look so impressive.

We take glue for wood (although it is suitable for PVA) and glue the saw cuts as your fantasy tells you, in any case it will turn out very beautifully. It is highly desirable that all our saw cuts adjoin each other well in several places, so that it is easier to glue them.

Hot pots are necessary and important in every home: you can place not only a freshly boiled kettle on them, but also a pot of soup, a frying pan with fried potatoes and fragrant meatballs. Coasters save you the hassle of running to the kitchen every five minutes to top up someone's toppings or hot water, and protect your countertop from all sorts of damage.

Equally useful, though less common, are cup holders. Usually a whole set is purchased, which includes about six coasters: they look harmoniously on the table, even if you have a festive dinner, without breaking out of the overall composition.

And, of course, they are essential for everyday use both in the office and at home. If you like to drink a cup or two of tea or coffee while working at the computer, the stand will protect the table from wet stains and scratches.

And besides, sometimes it's just nice to see a beautiful stand on the table with a funny inscription, a gentle landscape or just images of your favorite characters. And if your favorite bright mug is also on such a stand, then you are in a good mood.

If you are imbued with the description of all the advantages of coasters and are already pulling on your coat in order to quickly go to the store for them, then I have to detain you a little more: there are a lot of coasters for mugs, and the first thing you need to decide before buying is the material.

Coasters for hot - what are there?

The most popular material here is wood. Wooden coasters are made from a variety of species, but juniper is especially famous, not only convenient to use, but also emitting a pleasant aroma. Wooden coasters are in demand due to the fashion for environmentally friendly interior items that has spread not so long ago.

The most common form here is saw cuts, rough, but with their own charm. For decoration, drawings are often burned on their surface. Images can also be applied using laser engraving.

The main disadvantage of wooden coasters is the ability of the material to deteriorate under the influence of large amounts of water. Eventually the surface may darken and crack.

Cork coasters do not slip on the surface, but they must be washed carefully: the material may begin to crumble in water. In my cork coasters, brought as a souvenir from Spain, the problem is solved in a rather original way: a solid plate is fixed on the cork base, which can be easily washed from stains and on which images of urban landscapes are applied.

In the manufacture of stands, metal is also used, most often stainless steel. Such coasters are usually not flat, like wooden ones, but are kept on legs. They will serve you for a long time, however, if there are small details in the design of the model, then the dirt that has clogged into the holes will be quite difficult to clean out.

Silicone products, which are light and do not scratch the countertop, also find their buyer. Unfortunately, they are not difficult to accidentally cut.

The most unpretentious in handling plastic coasters, which are easy and convenient to wash. Their main drawback is that the surface is too slippery. If oil or water gets on it, the kettle can easily slip off.

Convenient, but a little fragile ceramic coasters. Less common in everyday life are leather products that look very unusual on the table.

Perhaps you know how to sew, knit or felt wool: in this case, you can make coasters yourself. Lace products look very gentle, while perfectly coping with their direct duties.

To make the kitchen more comfortable, needlewomen can make a stand for hot dishes with their own hands. This is not only a beautiful interior detail, but also a very necessary little thing. Any materials will be used.

Wood

The advantage of using this material is that it is more durable than, for example, fabric. To make a hot stand made of wood, made with your own hands, you will need:

  • Wooden blanks (sold in needlework stores. Choose the shape at your discretion).
  • Simple pencil.
  • Washing gum.
  • Acrylic lacquer.
  • Paints, watercolors are best.
  • Brush.
  • Burning device.

Let's get started:

  1. First, draw on paper how the stand for hot dishes, made by yourself, should look like. It can be flowers, berries, an ornament or an inscription. The border along the edges, which serves as a frame, looks beautiful. By doing this, it will be easier for you in the future. Now transfer the image with a simple pencil to a wooden blank.
  2. Take the burner and wait until it heats up. When everything is ready to continue working, burn the drawing.
  3. If in some places you can see a simple pencil, then be sure to wipe it with a rubber band, otherwise the work will look sloppy.
  4. You can leave the stand design as it is, just cover it with acrylic lacquer, or you can continue decorating.
  5. To do this, take the paints and start decorating. Do this very carefully, because it will be difficult to get rid of errors. If you are working with acrylic, then pay attention to the fact that in some places you will have to apply several layers to add saturation. Also, these paints can leak.
  6. Let the stand dry, then varnish it and let it dry for several hours.

Do-it-yourself hot plate is done!

Felt

Do-it-yourself felt coasters are even easier to make. They give more room for imagination than a tree. You can choose the color and design based on the style of your kitchen.

To create "citrus" coasters, you need to take:

  • Felt of different colors (orange for orange, yellow for lemon, green for lime, etc. )
  • Scissors.
  • Threads in matching colors or white.
  • Needle.
  • Pins.

What to do:

  1. Create blanks. For one fruit, you need two large circles of colored felt (the size of a future stand), a slightly smaller white circle and eight colored slices.
  2. Arrange the pieces in this order: large circle, medium and slices. Prick with a pin.
  3. Sew the slices around the perimeter through both layers.
  4. To hide the seams, you need to sew the second large circle to the bottom one.

It's very simple! Create a few more of these "fruits" so that all the guests have enough.

Idea

To make a stand for hot dishes, which is not difficult to make with your own hands, you can use scraps of felt. To do this, you need only one large piece, which will be the base, and several strips 5 millimeters wide. The length doesn't matter.

Take 3 different colors and lay them on top of each other with a ladder, spacing up to 10 millimeters. The beginning needs to be glued, now start twisting the strips tightly with a snail, add glue if necessary. To complete the flagellum, make the inner strip shorter than the outer one by 2 centimeters and fix it with glue, do the same with the middle one, only make it shorter by only 5 millimeters. Make as many snails as needed to cover the entire base. Attach blanks to it using a thermal gun.

Fabric

To make these DIY hot pot coasters out of fabric, you will need some scraps. You don't even have to go to the store to buy new materials, you probably have them lying around somewhere at home. So, for work you will need:

  • Fabric in eight different colors.
  • Sewing machine (if not, you can try to sew carefully with your hands).
  • Hexagon template.
  • Scissors.

What to do:

This handmade hot plate will be a beautiful addition to any feast. As you have seen, it is not at all difficult to make it from different materials.

Such coasters for hot dishes can be seen in large numbers in the Crimean souvenir stalls. They are made from juniper and they diverge very quickly. In the conditions of the middle zone, of course, you cannot meet juniper, but on the other hand, it is very easy to make such a stand with your own hands from tree branches with a beautiful pattern on the saw cut. These are acacia, apple, plum, apricot, oak and ash.

You can make several of these coasters in an hour. To begin with, we need to pick up branches 3-6 cm thick. You can combine saw cuts from branches of different thicknesses, it will be beautiful.

It is most convenient to cut a branch into saw cuts 4-5 mm thick with a miter saw:

But you can cut saw cuts with a hacksaw for wood. It is advisable to sand each cut from the front side with sandpaper.

The bark can be scraped off with a knife, but this is not necessary, especially if the bark is closely adjacent.

Now let's combine the stand from saw cuts of different diameters (in my case). Front facing inward:

However, keep in mind that the fewer links, the easier it will be to glue the stand. It is desirable that the tree rounds adjoin each other at several points. We glue together the links of the stand, laying saw cuts on top of several circles. To do this, we coat at the junction with PVA glue:

After making sure that all the links are linked together, we send the stand to dry under pressure. I took a linen bag of sand, put it on a stand and put another bucket of water on top. The stand is glued together in 4-5 hours.

There is another option for making a wooden hot plate. We cut out a circle from the matting and glue the cut branches on it on both sides. It turns out very stylish and beautiful. It's also easier to do:

Coasters of any kind are one of the most sought-after crafts in the modern home. They are needed everywhere: in the kitchen, in the workshop, at the desk and even in the bedroom. Stands help organize the workspace, provide convenience and comfort, they also protect furniture from accidental damage.

Any material can be used to make coasters, but wood is often used by craftsmen. The structural advantages are directly derived from the properties of the material:

      • ease of processing blanks;
      • low cost;
      • beautiful product appearance;
      • durability when properly processed;
      • functionality.

It is impossible not to mention the abundance of design solutions for products. You can find drawings of wooden coasters for every taste on the Internet, and if you show your imagination, it’s easy to create something truly unique.

      Making your own stands

Most of these products have a simple design, for their manufacture does not require special knowledge and skills. The stand is exactly what you should start your acquaintance with carpentry with. You will need a tool to work, but the list of everything you need is not too extensive; for most crafts, a saw, a jigsaw (manual or electric), sandpaper and glue are enough.

Tip! Often novice craftsmen refuse to use a hand tool in favor of its electric counterpart. Yes, power tools are obviously easier to use, but for fine work, a manual jigsaw is still preferable.

      Hot plate

Wooden hot plate is needed to protect furniture from high temperatures. Often this is an exceptionally functional product, the design of which is not subject to high requirements.

The simplest stand can be made from saw cut wood 10–20 mm thick. It is enough to clean it, sand it using sandpaper of different grain sizes. The product can be used immediately in the kitchen, but if desired, it can be modified.

It doesn't hurt to start by drilling a hole closer to the edge of the disc for easy storage. The stand will not be lost, but will constantly hang on the carnation allocated for it. From a simple saw cut, you can make a real work of art. The choice of decoration options is wide. You can emphasize the texture with a stain and open it with varnish (refers to the side that will be facing the table). An original thing can be obtained using modern decoupage technology - the creation of a kind of appliqué followed by varnishing.

A beautiful stand can also be made from several saw cuts of small diameter. The circles are glued together, trying to achieve the shape of a circle or polygon. They can be glued to a frame of thin boards. The finished product is decorated with an ornament made using the burning technique, it is desirable to open the front side with varnish.

      For books

Increasingly, electronic devices are used for reading, but there are still a lot of people who like to hold a familiar book in their hands. This simple and functional thing will surely come in handy for connoisseurs of literature. Do-it-yourself wooden book stand will provide comfortable reading, help maintain posture and reduce fatigue. Finding stand drawings on the Web is not difficult, but if you wish, everything - from the project to its implementation - can be done independently.

The purpose of the stand is to support the book, maintain an optimal reading angle and prevent pages from turning spontaneously. Proceeding from this, a simple scheme of the product emerges - a board, in the lower part of which a rail is stuffed, which serves as a support, an inclined stop is installed at the back, holding the entire structure in a given position. If the emphasis is made movable, the design will gain versatility, it can be tilted at different angles.

Assemble the stand into a single whole with wood glue, if necessary, reinforce the joints with self-tapping screws. The surface of the board must be sanded to remove burrs, after which it is painted or varnished.

      For laptop

Notebook advantages are obvious. It is portable and can be used almost anywhere. That's just working with him at the desk is extremely inconvenient. The keyboard is close to the screen, hands and eyes get tired. Many people put the laptop on their knees, this is not the best way out - overheating is possible. To get out of the situation, craftsmen make wooden laptop stands with their own hands.

      Stands have several requirements:

      • secure fixation of the device;
      • ease of use;
      • good cooling.

In order for the stand to meet expectations, the keyboard is placed at a slight incline to the horizontal, while the case itself must be held securely in place.

There are many homemade options. The simplest can be considered a sheet of plywood, comparable in size to the area of the base of a laptop, in which holes for cooling are cut, and legs are installed in the back. To prevent the laptop from slipping, you need to focus on a thin rail.

Tip! The scheme can be improved by installing a fan from the system unit from below, powered by a USB output. The design will not only provide comfort, but also protect against overheating when working in resource-intensive applications.

      For tablet

The tablet is indispensable for games, Internet surfing and reading e-books. A wooden tablet stand will help make its use more comfortable; you can do it yourself in just a few minutes.

How the product will look like is purely a matter of taste. It can repeat the design of the book stand, you may have to adjust the dimensions. Those who do not like template solutions should read the description of a simple and original design.

For homemade, you will need a board 80-100 mm wide, slightly longer than the length of the electronic device. Using a milling cutter, a groove is made in the plank, 3-5 mm wide exceeding the thickness of the plate. It is enough to sand the product, open it with varnish and insert the tablet into the groove. Instead of a plank, you can use a dry branch of a suitable diameter sawn to length.

      For telephone

Everyone can make a wooden phone stand with their own hands. Having the skills of working with a jigsaw, you can cut out not just a functional device, but a real table decoration. Structurally, this product is practically no different from the options for the tablet, except perhaps in size.

The drawing of the product is made individually, based on the features of a particular phone model. In addition to the actual ease of installation, when designing, it is necessary to provide access to the headphone jack. It would be useful to provide for the possibility of charging. The charger plug can be glued directly into the cradle to turn it into a docking station.

      For pencils

Pens and pencils are consumables for schoolchildren and students. They don't wear out as much as they get lost (often in their own home). A stand for pens and pencils made of wood will help you quickly and beautifully solve the problem.

There are many options for making a stand, it all depends on the skills of the master and his imagination. The first thing that comes to mind is glass. Indeed, with a lathe, knowledge of technology and the ability to use it, it is not difficult to carve a figured glass in a few minutes, which will ensure the safety of pencils and decorate the table.

You can use a piece of rail as a base for a stand, in which you can drill a lot of holes of different diameters. The holes can be located not only vertically, which will make the original pencil "hedgehog". Instead of a rail, you can use a round timber cut or a branch sawn lengthwise.
