Tea tree is a small plant that grows in tropical climates. The leafy plant is typically harvested for its oil which is known for its cleansing and purifying properties – hence why it’s so popular in skincare, especially for those with oily, blemish-prone skin. Not only does it help to reduce the appearance of blemishes, it works with your skin to help keep them at bay too.

What’s so special about our tea tree? We source our Community Fair Trade tea tree from a number of farms and independent farmers in rural Kenya. They steam-distil the tea tree leaves within 12 hours of harvesting to ensure our Tea Tree Oil is at its most pure and potent.

And since tea tree has natural purifying properties, the crops don’t need chemicals to fend off pests.

Our trade helps provide farmers working within our producer group with a steady income in an area where employment opportunities are low. It’s how we make sure we source the best quality ingredients while having a positive impact on people and the planet.

  3. Shampoo – Some of our customers love to add a few drops of Tea Tree Oil to their shampoo as they feel it soothes their scalp and minimises itching.

Tea tree (melaleuca) is a tropical plant. These are trees or shrubs of the Myrtle family. Eucalyptus trees belong to the same family. This is why tea tree essential oil has such a strong aroma and powerful antibacterial properties.

Its name can be considered erroneous, because this plant has nothing to do with tea. According to legend, the navigator James Cook, during his trip to Australia, tried to find a plant from which to make traditional English tea, or at least its semblance. Melaleuca turned out to be such a local shrub, the natives prepared decoctions from its leaves. And now, at the suggestion of Cook, it began to be called a tea tree. The traveler was also seduced by the healing effect this extract had. He saw how the locals used it to cure colds, skin wounds ... But they were able to fully appreciate and study the benefits of the plant and its essential oil much later - at the beginning of the 20th century. Moreover, it was used as an antiseptic even in military field surgery during World War II. And since its inclusion in the British Pharmaceutical Code, active use has begun for consumer purposes: in cosmetics, parapharmaceuticals.

Composition of tea tree oil

The miraculous properties of this extract are determined by its composition. The oil contains cineole, pinene, terpinenes, cymin - almost a hundred compounds. But the most important can be considered 1,8-cineol and terpinen-4-ol. Both compounds have a powerful bactericidal effect. But 1,8-cineole can theoretically irritate the skin. Therefore, if it is possible to find out the composition and proportions of the oil before buying, choose a product with 40% terpinene and 5% cineole. This will be the original oil with optimal bactericidal properties, but minimal risk of irritation.

So, tea tree oil is a unique, powerful natural antiseptic that is able to overcome even antibiotic-resistant pathogens. The compounds included in its composition are detrimental to staphylococcus and streptococcus, as well as to fungal and viral infections.

What is the best oil?

It is believed that the birthplace of this plant is Australia. Therefore, if you see on the packaging of this particular manufacturer, there is no doubt about the authenticity of the product. But other regions can also produce high-quality goods. The main thing is that it should be a small bottle and always made of tinted glass. And the composition should not contain anything other than the oil itself.

Why is original oil so expensive? due to costly production. To preserve its beneficial properties, it is extracted by steam distillation from shoots and leaves. The longer the leaves are steamed, the more useful substances and volatile compounds can be saved. From a ton of plant leaves, under all conditions, it is possible to extract about ten liters of oil.

How to use tea tree oil on the face?

If you buy facial cosmetics with oil, then use according to the instructions for use. If you use the original, add a few drops to the base oil (for example, peach, almond) and gently wipe the skin of the face with a cotton pad. If the skin is very dry, you can additionally apply a nourishing cream to your face.

Why is tea tree oil good for body skin?

Added to the shower product, it normalizes oily skin, relieves inflammatory elements on the chest, back, and helps to combat sweating of the feet and armpits.

In bath products, tea tree oil has a general strengthening effect: inhalation of vapors is useful for the prevention and treatment of colds and simply for relieving emotional stress.

The properties of the oil allow it to be added to many cosmetic products.

For example, powders or BB and CC correctors with tea tree oil give the skin a matte finish and prevent inflammation on the face.

Shampoos, balms, vinegar, hair masks are suitable for oily scalp, regulate sebum production and prevent dandruff.

DIY cosmetics

Tea tree oil can be added to any of your cosmetic products.

  • A few drops in the palm of your hand with a shampoo or mask - and you will get rid of dandruff, as dandruff is most often caused by pathogenic flora, and the ingredients of tea tree oil do an excellent job with it.
  • A couple of drops of oil in lotion, washing gel or cream is a salvation for oily skin. If you wipe your face with such products, they will help to cope with excessive shine, narrow pores, and have an antibacterial effect.
  • For problematic skin, you can use the oil in its pure form, but only pointwise, applying to the face with a cotton swab on the inflammatory element.
  • Add two or three drops of oil to your shower gel and you will see significant improvements if you have oily skin on your back, sometimes pimples and itching. Your legs and feet will feel much more comfortable, and sweating under the armpits will also decrease.
  • Hand cream with the addition of oil will help with non-healing cracks, while caring for nails prone to fungal infection. Oil lotion is an excellent antiseptic that you should always carry with you in your purse.
  • Aromatic bath with tea tree oil will relieve you from anxiety and fatigue. But for a greater effect, it is better to dissolve the oil in some kind of base - milk, honey, or even a handful of sea salt.
  • For tone and well-being at the first sign of a cold, add a few drops of 100% oil to the inhalation solution.
  • And before leaving the house during the flu season, you can dissolve a drop of oil in a teaspoon of base oil and lubricate a little with this mixture near the nostrils, if you tolerate the tart aroma of tea tree easily.

How do I know if the oil will irritate?

The simplest test is usually done: one drop is applied to the skin of the wrist - like hair dye - and wait 15-20 minutes. If there is no redness, itching or other manifestations, everything is in order. Can oil be applied to mucous membranes?

No, the active ingredients are good for the skin, but they are still aggressive for the mucous membranes. To avoid burns, use the oil only on undamaged areas of the skin. Or dilute it to 10-15% concentration.
