A guy named Lucas, with the help of his uncle Keith, becomes a member of the Crows basketball team from high school. Team captain Nathan, who is also Lucas' half-brother, dislikes him from the very beginning, and this becomes the basis of their rivalry. Lucas's romantic interest in Nathan's girlfriend, Peyton, only fuels their feud. Peyton's best friend, Brooke, is trying to build a relationship with Lucas, and Nathan is also dating Lucas' best friend, Hailey. Also, the story largely develops around the guys' father, Dan. Through his flashback, much is revealed about his relationship with Lucas' mother Karen, as well as Nathan's mother Deb, and why he ended up with one woman and not another.

Maut begins a relationship with his boss Alice in order to move up the career ladder. He later starts dating Brooke's assistant named Millicent.

The sixth season continues to show the relationship between Peyton and Lucas as they reunite and have to deal with birth complications. Peyton's ex-boyfriend, producer Julian Baker, wants to turn Lucas' book into a movie. Nathan and Hayley have a hard time after their babysitter kidnaps their son Jamie and takes Dan hostage. Brooke is attacked in her store, leaving her psychologically traumatized. She later decides to adopt a boy named Sam. Star player Quentin is killed, and Nathan becomes even more confident in his desire to get into the NBA. Brooke has to fight her mother for her company, and again confront the man who attacked her, who turns out to be the same man who killed Quentin. Brooke then begins a relationship with Julian.

Season 7 takes place 14 months later. Lucas and Peyton leave town. Nathan's NBA career is being put in jeopardy by a growing scandal that also involves Hayley. Dan, with the support of his new wife Rachel, becomes a motivational speaker. Brooke launches a new clothing line in the midst of a conflict involving Julian and a model named Alex. Because of her drug addiction, Millicent Mouth leaves her. Then Hailey's mother dies and she becomes depressed. At the end of the season, the heroes travel to Utah for the premiere of Julian's film. Hayley announces her pregnancy, Julian proposes to Brooke.

The eighth season revolves around Brooke and Julian's wedding. Mite and Millicent reconcile. Nathan returns to college, but finds it difficult to fit in. Nathan and Clay open their sports company. Brooke has to lose her business. Brooke and Julian then plan to adopt a child and hook up with a pregnant girl who decides to keep the baby at the last moment, leaving Brooke heartbroken. Hayley gives birth to a baby girl and names her Lydia. Nathan finds out who was behind the fact that Brooke and Jamie nearly drowned. At the end of the season, Brooke becomes pregnant and gives birth to twins.

In the ninth season, Hayley has to deal with a lot of problems as Nathan is kidnapped after he returns from Europe.
